I have searched everywhere trying to determine the difference between 'Put a -1/-1 counter..." and "X gets -1/-1", but have not had any luck. So I am hoping someone here can help! If I have Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons and Illness in the Ranks on the field and let's say my opponent has a 1/1 token enter the battlefield with Forbidden Orchard, would Illness in the Ranks effect cause the second effect of Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons to trigger? If so, I have a very fun deck idea...
No, Hapatra won't trigger. Only effects that specifically use the word "counter" use counters.
Also, a -1/-1 counter is more permanent, it remains on the permanent and has the effect for as long as that permanent is on the battlefield and has the counter. Otoh, a simple -1/-1 is either temporary (usually "until the end of the turn") or relying on the source being in the correct zone (usually the battlefield). The time running out or the source leaving the zone ends the effect.

To trigger Hepatra, the spell, ability or other effect needs to actually say to "put -1/-1 counters" on the creatures.
