How does stonescale hydra work exactly??? I noticed the 2 X's on the top and I was wondering if I tap my lands the same way I would a 1 x creature or does its power/toughness depend on how I tapped for both X's?
In any case, an XX in the mana cost works similarly to an X, except you have to pay two mana for every 1 you want to increase the X in the text by. So you can spend 2 for X = 1, 4 for X = 2, 20 for X = 10, whatever. Do note that both Xs have to be the same amount and therefore the amount you spend on the Xs will always be a multiple of two.
All Xs on a card have the same value. When casting a spell with X in its cost, you first choose a vale for X. With a double X in the cost, that means, that the spell's cost becomes twice that amount plus whatever else the cost entails. Triple X's mean thrice the X cost plus the extra, etc.
For example, if a spell's cost is XXGG, when you cast the spell, you choose a value for X, say X=2, then calculate the cost, which is X+X+GG totaling at 4GG.
Note, that what you end up paying doesn't have any influence on the value of X. Cost reductions could make an X spell cost no mana, but that doesn't make X zero. Likewise, cost increases and additional csts can make a spell cost more, but just because you have to pay 10 mana for the X spell doesn't make that spell's X value any higher. It's always the same order: choose the value for X, calculate the cost, then pay.
Is there an actual leaked card from an upcoming set named Stonescale Hydra? I'm still very lost as to what OP is referring to. The only two creatures with XX in their mana cost are Hangarback Walker and Walking Ballista.
