I played MTG when I was in high school, but really never understood much about it.
I am starting to get back into with friends now, but all my cards are from the Time Spiral Block (10 Years ago).
Obviously I can play, but because this is an old set am I right that this would prevent me from playing in standard or any other structured game style since it is not in current rotation?
It depends. A card need only be printed in a recent expansion for all printings of that card to be legal in a given format. So, for Time Spiral block cards, Aven Mindcensor is legal in Standard because it was printed in Amonkhet.
Also, all those cards would be legal in Modern since Modern goes back to 8th edition and they are all legal in Legacy (besides banned cards for those formats of course).

Thanks for the clarification.
