I've been dabbling with a casual EDH soulshift deck and I started to wonder how Deathrender works with soulshift.
Let's say I have Promised Kannushi equipped with Deathrender and it dies for whatever reason. Can I use the soulshift to get a creature form my grave to my hand before resolving Deathrender?
If the equipped creature dies, then soulshift and Deathrender's ability will trigger at the same time, so will go on the stack at the same time (C.R. 603.2, 603.3). If you controlled both Deathrender and Promised Kannushi as those abilities triggered, you will control both abilities (C.R. 112.6), so you can choose their order on the stack (C.R. 603.3b) -- thus, for example, you can have soulshift get to resolve before Deathrender's ability by putting the former above the latter (C.R. 116.4). However, soulshift can target only a Spirit card in your graveyard with converted mana cost less than or equal to the soulshift number, not any other creature card (C.R. 702.45a, 114.1d, 603.3d, 601.2c).
Yes this works how you want it.
As you control both abilities, you choose in what order they go on the stack. So if you put the Deathrender ability on the stack first, then the Soulshift ability, then the Soulshift ability will resolve first returning the target Spirit card to your hand, so it will be in your hand and a valid choice to put onto the battlefield with the Deathrender ability.
Since you control both triggers you get to choose the order in which they go on the stack. If you put the trigger from Deathrender on the stack first you will return a creature card to your hand with Soulshift before deathrender tells you to put a creature card in your hand on to the battlefield.
