I've recently tried to work in the use of Illusionist's Stratagem into my deck and I had a question about it's use.
According to MTG Ruling "Each card that returns to the battlefield will be a new object with no connection to the creature that was exiled."
If my opponent targets my Maverick Thopterist with Shock
I follow up with using Illusionist's Stratagem on my Maverick Thopterist, which exiles it and returns it to play.
Does Shock still target my Maverick Thopterist once it returns to play?
Nope. Shock's target is gone (the Thopterist on the table is a new object), so shock fizzles - meaning it is countered for not having a legal target. Thopterist survives. You also get to retrigger ant ETB abilities, like creating the thopter tokens.
