Hi everyone! Completely new to Magic and in the basic learning process. I was wondering if someone could please tell me when during the game I can use Instants. The person teaching me seems to be a bit confused themselves or maybe even changing the rules a bit to their advantage, so I need some solid advice. What phases may I use my Instants and can it only be during my own turn of the game? If it can be during my opponents turn, as well, what phase can I bring one out, etc.? I would really appreciate some info! Many thanks!
The phrase "any time you could cast an instant" means "any time you have priority" (C.R. 304.5), and the rules generally let you cast instants any time you have priority (C.R. 116.1, especially C.R. 116.1a).
You get priority (and can cast instants) during your opponent's turn (or any other player's turn) and can cast instants in response to another spell or ability (C.R. 116.1a, 116.3, 116.7).
You get priority (and can cast instants) on all phases and steps of the turn (except during the untap step and, in most cases, during the cleanup step [C.R. 502.3, 514.3; see also C.R. 500.3]) (C.R. 116.1a, 116.3, 503.1, 504.2, 505.5, 507.2, 508.2, 509.4, 510.3, 511.1, 513.1).
EDIT: Rearrangement and minor correction after comment 3 was posted.
EDIT (Jul. 17, 2018): One rule was renumbered with Dominaria.
Something that peteroupc left out, in order to resolve (play or activate) any non-land card or ability you must pass priority to all players (in turn order) and all players must pass without doing anything this repeats untill the stack is empty (LIFO, last in first out). If the stack is empty and all players pass priority, the game moves to the next phase.
