I am trying to figure out this interaction, my opponent has Rubinia Soulsinger out.
I have Animar on the field. If I cast Gilded Drake, my opponent can just tap Rubina in response to the CITP trigger and steal the trigger too? How does this work? (in this example Animar could be any creature)
I have seen this many times, but I don't understand the part about my CITP goes on the stack but it then gets taken from me even though its already on the stack. Shouldn't it fizzle ?
112.7a Once activated or triggered, an ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Destruction or removal of the source after that time won’t affect the ability. Note that some abilities cause a source to do something (for example, “Prodigal Pyromancer deals 1 damage to target creature or player”) rather than the ability doing anything directly. In these cases, any activated or triggered ability that references information about the source because the effect needs to be divided checks that information when the ability is put onto the stack. Otherwise, it will check that information when it resolves. In both instances, if the source is no longer in the zone it’s expected to be in at that time, its last known information is used. The source can still perform the action even though it no longer exists.
There may be one or two other points needing clarification. Here is a detailed sequence:
Your main phase begins.
You get priority and cast Gilded Drake. You pay the cost of 1U (or U if your Aminar has at least one +1/+1 counter).
You get priority and pass.
Opponent gets priority and passes.
The top object on the stack (the spell cast in step 2) resolves. You put Gilded Drake on the battlefield, triggering its ability.
You would get priority, but there is a triggered ability to put on the stack. You put "When Gilded Drake enters the battlefield, exchange control of Gilded Drake and up to one target creature an opponent controls. If you don't make an exchange, sacrifice Gilded Drake. This ability can't be countered except by spells and abilities." on the stack, choosing opponent's Rubinia Soulsinger as the target. (Or, you could decline to choose a target at all.)
You get priority and pass.
Opponent gets priority and activates the "T: Gain control of target creature for as long as you control Rubinia and Rubinia remains tapped." ability of Rubinia. Opponent chooses your Gilded Drake as the target and pays the cost by tapping Rubinia.
Opponent gets priority and passes.
You get priority and pass.
The top object on the stack (the ability activated in step 8) resolves. Opponent gains control of Gilded Drake.
You get priority and pass.
Opponent gets priority and passes.
The top object on the stack (the ability put there in step 6) resolves. Your ability does nothing because an exchange of control only happens if the controllers were different.
701.9b When control of two permanents is exchanged, if those permanents are controlled by different players, each of those players simultaneously gains control of the permanent that was controlled by the other player. If, on the other hand, those permanents are controlled by the same player, the exchange effect does nothing.
When the Drake enters, before your opponent gets priority to activate Rubinia, you put the Drake's trigger on the stack and target a creature of theirs. If they respond by taking the Drake, then when the Drake's trigger (which you still control, and which target didn't change) resolves, the exchange does nothing since both the Drake and the target creature are controlled by the same player. You can't sacrifice the Drake since you don't control it.
