Opponent casts Lightning Bolt targeting Player for 3 damage.
Player allows Lightning Bolt to resolve.
Opponent redirects 3 damage to Players Planeswalker.
Is this a legal move? The argument my group has is that it shouldn't be legal because the player can't respond if he doesn't know the intended choice was the planeswalker. According to what I have read it sounds like it should be legal. What is the official ruling?
Yes, that is how it plays out. The planeswalker damage redirection rule creates a replacement effect, and those are applied right before the event happens. This is during the resolution of the Bolt, so no one can respond anymore, when the choice to redirect is made. If someone wants to respond, they have to do so without knowing wether the damage is going to be redirected or not, and any response to the Bolt can alter the player's decision to do so or not.
