Hello all. I saw this question essentially asked somewhere deep in the forums but didn't see it answered so I'm asking again. Here's the scenario.
What happens if I clone a Dragonlord Silumgar and one of the 2 goes to the graveyard via the legend rule? Do I still keep both creatures because I control a Dragonlord Silumgar or does the effect tie directly to the specific copy of Dragonlord Silumgar that targed the card? Does the legend rule apply before the ETB effect and I just don't get anything if the cloned Dragonlord dies immediately?
What if I have Mirror Gallery, several cloned Dragonlords and one of them is destroyed? Do I only need to keep one dragonlord to keep all the stuff stolen with the others?
No. Whenever a card refers to itself by name, it means "this object" (unless it actually says "cards named..." like Akron Legionnaire) so in your case, you will only keep the permanent stolen with the Dragonlord you keep around.
Note that the cloned Dragonlord still triggers even if you decide to put that one into the graveyard and you still choose a target (which could be relevant for something like WIllbreaker). You just won't gain control of it due to the Dragonlord's ability since the duration is already over.
The Mirror Gallery answer is the same. Each Dragonlord "tracks" the permanent it stole.
The ability does not say "as long as you control a permanent named Dragonlord Silumgar", it says "control Dragonlord Silumgar". When a card refers to itself by name, it means "this card" only and not others with the same name or that are copies of it.
If you get a second Dragonlord Silumgar (or a Clone copying it, same thing) on the battlefield, the legend rule is applied before the ETB ability can even go to the stack. The ability still goes to the stack even if the Silumgar that died was the new one, but it will have no effect as its duration is already over before it could begin so you don't get to control the permanent for any moment.
If you have multiple Silumgars and then lose the Mirror Gallery, you'll only keep the one permanent stolen by the one remaining Silumgar, the others return to your opponent's control.
Thank you both. This means the EDH deck I want to build can still be done, it's just even more reliant on Mirror Gallery than I originally thought. This, inherently isn't necessarily a bad thing. I just need to prioritize sacrifice effects even more than I thought I did.
