Hi Guys ~ and Girls ~
It's my First Time here (yey)
I'm gonna ask about something.
There's this one duel with a friend of mine
When I cast Gonti, Lord of Luxury
My friend used Lightning Axe on my Gonti, Lord of Luxury
So I was like " Okay. My Gonti is Dead "
I was about to look at my friend's top 4 cards.
Then my friend responded that I can't look at anymore because Gonti's ability didn't triggered because " I killed your Gonti before Gonti entered the battlefield", my friend said.
I responded back by telling my friend " since you killed my Gonti by using your Lightning Axe, it means Gonti is already in a field. ". My friend still said my Gonti's Ability won't trigger.
Then we asked a player if my Gonti's ability won't trigger anymore. Because my friend killed my Gonti right away with Lightning Axe. So for short it already entered the battlefield.
But that player said that Gonti's ability won't trigger because it was killed right away before entering the battlefield.
I let it slide for now. And reaaaalllly confuse(someone help me).
Soooo until right now I'm still confused and asking right now if which is right or wrong or someone please explain
I'm still slightly new with magic and all.(sorry. I'm a noob)
Advance Thanks for everyone who will reply/leave a comment or explain about this situation.
Please do help me so my mind will stop thinking about this and be in a clear state of mind
In order for Gonti, Lord of Luxury to be a valid target for Lightning Axe, it must be a creature. In order for it to be a creature, and not a spell, it must enter the battlefield.
All your friends are wrong. You cannot deal damage to a spell being cast.
His ETB ability would have triggered. The only way to prevent the ETB trigger would be to counter the spell.
Here are a few rules, if your friends aren't convinced yet:
608.3. If the object that’s resolving is a permanent spell, its resolution involves a single step (unless it’s
an Aura). The spell card becomes a permanent and is put onto the battlefield under the control of
the spell’s controller.
603.3. Once an ability has triggered, its controller puts it on the stack as an object that’s not a card the
next time a player would receive priority. See rule 116, “Timing and Priority.” The ability becomes
the topmost object on the stack. It has the text of the ability that created it, and no other
characteristics. It remains on the stack until it’s countered, it resolves, a rule causes it to be removed
from the stack, or an effect moves it elsewhere.
116.5. Each time a player would get priority, the game first performs all applicable state-based actions
as a single event (see rule 704, “State-Based Actions”), then repeats this process until no state-based
actions are performed. Then triggered abilities are put on the stack (see rule 603, “Handling
Triggered Abilities”). These steps repeat in order until no further state-based actions are performed
and no abilities trigger. Then the player who would have received priority does so.
112.7a Once activated or triggered, an ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Destruction or removal of the source after that time won’t affect the ability. Note that some
abilities cause a source to do something (for example, “Prodigal Pyromancer deals 1 damage to
target creature or player”) rather than the ability doing anything directly. In these cases, any
activated or triggered ability that references information about the source because the effect
needs to be divided checks that information when the ability is put onto the stack. Otherwise, it
will check that information when it resolves. In both instances, if the source is no longer in the
zone it’s expected to be in at that time, its last known information is used. The source can still
perform the action even though it no longer exists.
Also, your friends cannot jump the gun, and kill Gonti right away. Because they don't have priority to do so. After any spell/ability resolves, the active player (=the player whose turn it is) gets priority, so he/she gets the first chance to act afterwards.
116.3b The active player receives priority after a spell or ability (other than a mana ability) resolves.

I'll not let something like this slide next time. It cringe me. haha
