I'm still kind of new, so sometimes I'm unsure of at when I can perform certain actions.
I have a creature enchanted with Flickering Ward and have Sigarda's Aid on the field.
My opponent has a green creature and a blue creature untapped. I declared protection from green when I played Flickering Ward. I declare an attack knowing that he MUST block with his blue creature, unless he wants to take direct damage, because of the protection. He declares his blocker as his blue creature.
Would I be able to pay the 1 white mana to bring the ward back to my hand and then play it again with protection from blue instead because of Sigarda's Aid??? Rendering my creature completely unblockable, granted that I have enough white mana for each color creature he has
I know I would be recasting Flickering Ward at instant speed, but I don't know if I am able to bring it back to my hand at instant speed.
You can activate Flickering Ward's ability to be returned to your hand any time you could cast an instant (as is the case with all activated abilities for which it isn't specified otherwise), as well as cast the Ward anytime you could cast an instant thanks to Sigarda's Aid. However, that won't allow you to make your creature completely unblockable here. At the time blockers are declared, your creature necessarily only has protection from one color, so your opponent can block with the creature of the other color. You can recast the Ward after the block to give protection from the blocker's color, but that will not undo the block. Once a block is declared in a way that's legal at the time of declaration, that block stands, and it is too late for things that would have made that block illegal to matter. With that said, giving protection from the blocker's color to your creature at least makes it so the combat damage that the blocker would deal to it will be prevented, so it's not all in vain, but your attacker won't get through to the player.
I'm a former judge (lapsed), who keeps up to date on rules and policy. Keep in mind that judges' answers aren't necessarily more valid than those of people who aren't judges; what matters is we can quote the rules to back up our answers. When in doubt, ask for such quotes.
