Someone once said Hecatomb is basically the black Rolling Thunder. Can someone explain how this works? It comes into play, you must sacrifice 4 creatures or it dies. How are you able to use it's damage ability if you can't sacrifice the creatures?
Rolling Thunder. Tags please.
Reading it, yeah, they work out similarly. Hecatomb costs {1} more and there are some procedural differences, but for your question:
Hecatomb enters the battlefield, its first ability triggers and goes on the stack.
You activate the second ability in response, it resolves. Rinse and repeat until you run out of swamps and/or opponents.
(If you've not won yet) Hecatomb's trigger resolves, and you presumably don't pay and sacrifice it.
The trick is in the "in response" bit. You do get a chance to do that. Each player gets arbitrarily many attempts, in fact.
