The number of spells you’ve cast is counted only as Aetherflux Reservoir’s triggered ability resolves. For example, if you cast a spell, then respond to the triggered ability with a second spell, you’ll gain 4 life total.
Now, I had been assuming that the life gain would add up like a "triangular number" -- play 1 spell, get 1 life
Play 2 spells, get 3 life (2+1)
Play 3 spells, get 6 life (3+2+1)
Play 4 spells, get 10 life (4+3+2+1)
Play 5 spells, get 15 life (5+4+3+2+1)
But according to this note, it can escalate a lot faster -- instants will allow you to gain as much life as the square of the number of spells you play.
So with 5 spells, play the first and then play 4 instants while each previous spell is on the stack.
When the most recent instant resolves, it will gain you 5 life, then the next will gain you 5 life, and so on.
Yes. A small note, though, it is not the spell gaining you life, it is the trigger from the Reservoir that does this. So with 5 spells on the stack, there are also 5 triggers on the stack, a total of 10 objects that are waiting to resolve. They alternate spell/trigger/spell/trigger/... , with the trigger for the most recently cast spell on top of the stack.

5 spells will gain 25 life.
Am I interpreting that correctly?
