I was playing a deck with my buddies the other day that I haven't played since 2009/2010ish that uses the cunning spark cunning sparkmagebasilisk collar combo for creature removal and my friend told me that deathtouch now read "combat damage" instead of just damage. I looked online and found a source that has the new deathtouch text that says combat damage but I can't find anything that actually talks about the rule change only about how deathtouch was changed in regards to the blocking queue. Does this combo still work or should I throw it out of my deck completely? Please excuse me if I didn't use the card tag correctly haha
Notes: Card tags fixed. The plural tags don't work that way, you need to separate cards with line jumps if you use those.
That combination still works. Deathtouch sees all damage dealt by the source to a creature as lethal, not just combat damage. The only rules changes regarding deathtouch are about assignment of combat damage when it was made so that combat damage no longer uses the stack with M10.
Here are the full rules about deathtouch from the CR:
702.2. Deathtouch
702.2a Deathtouch is a static ability.
702.2b Any nonzero amount of combat damage assigned to a creature by a source with deathtouch
is considered to be lethal damage, regardless of that creature’s toughness. See rules 510.1c–d.
702.2c A creature with toughness greater than 0 that’s been dealt damage by a source with
deathtouch since the last time state-based actions were checked is destroyed as a state-based
action. See rule 704.
702.2d The deathtouch rules function no matter what zone an object with deathtouch deals damage
from.
702.2e If an object changes zones before an effect causes it to deal damage, its last known
information is used to determine whether it had deathtouch.
702.2f Multiple instances of deathtouch on the same object are redundant.
702.2b is about assigning combat damage, while 702.2c is the actual destruction rule for deathtouch, see that it talks about damage, not just combat damage.
