I have a Marrow-Gnawer and my opponent has a Primalcrux and an Asceticism on the field. I use Go for the throat on Primalcrux but I forgot it had Hexproof. Does go for the throat fizzle or do I have to target my Marrow-Gnawer instead?
Spells that target can't be cast if the permanent chosen as target has hexproof on cast.
Your spell would fizzle if Asceticism was flashed in somehow, but as it was already there the game will step back to just before you cast Go for the throat.
You can't be forced to target Marrow-Gnawer, but depending on how formal your game is you might be issued some kind of warning for illegal action.
601.2. To cast a spell is to take it from where it is (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect. Casting a spell includes proposal of the spell (rules 601.2a–d) and determination and payment of costs (rules 601.2f–h). To cast a spell, a player follows the steps listed below, in order. A player must be legally allowed to cast the spell to begin this process, ignoring any effect that would prohibit that spell from being cast based on information determined during that spell’s proposal. (Such effects are considered during the check detailed in rule 601.2e.) If, at any point during the casting of a spell, a player is unable to comply with any of the steps listed below, the casting of the spell is illegal; the game returns to the moment before the casting of that spell was proposed (see rule 717, “Handling Illegal Actions”).
The full answer to that question partially depends on what you were playing at the time (casual play, regular REL tournament or competitive+ REL tournament) and on quickly that error was spotted. What will never happen is that you are forced to choose your own creature as a target.
If you play casually, i'd suggest just retracting the spell being cast and proceeding normally.
If you're playing at a tournament, depending on how much time (and game actions) has passed between casting Go for the Throat and realizing the mistake, a judge may do a backup to right before the spell was cast (similar to casual play), which means rolling back all actions (like spells cast, attacks done, life totals changed, cards drawn) up to the point right before you cast Go for the Throat. If that happens to be too long ago (too much to roll back or players can't remember what happened in the meantime), your opponent might be just out of luck: Primalcrux is dead, he did not notice it in time and he won't get it back.
Depending on the Rules Enforcement Level (REL), you might get a warning for performing a Game Rule Violation. If your opponent did not notice the error, he might also receive a warning for Failure to maintain Game State.
