It's probably already been talked about here but im playing a bit of catch up. Could someone explain to me how the new waste basic lands work and are they going to be in all formats from now on?
i was having a convo with some magic buddies we still play a lot of older cards and there were talks that you needed these wastes for tapping colorless on cards like balefire dragon for example i wasnt sure if that was legit or just weird rumor and i noticed they reprinted wasteland for eternal masters with the new waste diamond. which led me to believe its carrying over for all colorless symbols.
Where the 5 normal basic lands have an intrinisc mana ability that creates WUBRG respectively the new wastes have a mana ability that can be used to create colorless mana C.
This colorless mana can be used either to pay for the generic costs of spells or abilities or for costs represented by C in spells or abilities like on Kozilek, the Great Distortion.
As to whether they are going to be legal in all formats. Currently they have only been printed in Oath of the Gatewatch so are legal in all formats where that set is legal. If they are not reprinted they will remain legal for Modern and the eternal formats but will rotate out of Standard with Oath of the Gatewatch.

The 5 on Balefire dragon is a generic mana symbol, it does not care what mana is used to pay its cost. IF you need colorless mana to pay a cost the cards will now have C as part of the mana cost like on Kozilek, the Great Distortion.

Rumor or misunderstanding yes. There is not going to be a change to how 12345 etc work going forwards you will still be able to use mana of any or no color to pay those costs. The only difference is that dedicated colorless costs and mana are getting there own symbol.

Wastes count as a basic land (so you can have any number of them in your deck), have NO basic land type (important for some things like domain) and tap for colorless mana. They are legal in all formats and not very likely to show up again in future sets without any eldrazi theme.
Being a basic land means that they can be fetched with a terramorphic expanse and count for the new zendikar-taplands.
Because they have no basic land type, does this mean that you don't need one for Coalition Victory to work?

From what i just read on the mtg sight it says this about that. "Wastes is a new basic land that taps to add {C} to your mana pool. Notably, it doesn't have any land types. So if an effect instructs you to choose a basic land type, you can't choose Wastes. Cards like Dream Thrush and Coalition Victory don't change at all. Wastes is basic, so you can have as many of them as you want in your Constructed deck, including your colorless Commander decks. Hooray!"

That's correct, the basic land types are still Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, Forest.
