Hey Guys! I have a question about the ruling and what takes place at when. As the title says Splatter Thug vs Shock. I was playing in a Modern FNM last Friday and I cast Splatter Thug and unleased it. My opponent cast Shock to destroy it before I added the +1/+1 counter to the Splatter Thug. I was thinking that when I cast the Splatter Thug I had to decide then whether or not to unleash it which would give it the counter before the Shock damage. Would the Splatter Thug stay or would it be killed by the Shock? Thanks for your answers and help with this question!
Unleash is a replacement effect. You decide whether or not you want to unleash Splatter Thug as its entering the battlefield. If you choose to unleash it, it will enter as a 3/3(2/2 with a +1/+1 counter) and at no point will it be on the battlefield as a 2/2 so it will survive a single Shock.

Splatter Thug enters with an additional counter (if it was unleashed). It is not a trigger, but a replacement effect, so there is no opportunity to shock it in response to adding the counter. Once anyone gets priority, it already has its counter on it.
Thanks Guys!! That's what I was thinking but wanted to make sure. I might play that deck again tomorrow night. That was the only guy that beat me last week. It wasn't just from that though but I do want my revenge against him lol!!

Just a quick point on this part - The specific point in time where you make the decision on whether to unleash Splatter Thug is while it is entering the battlefield. It's not a decision you make while casting it. This can be relevant if your opponent has responses to make - for instance, they will need to decide whether or not to counter it without knowing whether you intend to unleash it, and you can change your decision based on responses they make (for instance, you have a Garruk's Packleader which they Murder in response to Splatter Thug and you're going to need a blocker now.)
