Today, I played a game of Planechase, and, after every player had taken their opening hand, we revealed the top card of the planar deck, which turned out to be a phenomenon. Another player stated that if the first card was a phenomenon, its effect would not happen and the next card would be revealed, but I disputed that, saying that there was no reason for the card's effect to not happen.
What does everyone else say about this? If the first card revealed from the planar deck is a phenomenon, does its effect still happen?

“Those who would trade their freedoms for security will have neither.”-Benjamin Franklin
“When the people fear the government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.”-Thomas Jefferson
“A vote is like a rifle; its usefulness depends upon the character of its user.”-Theodore Roosevelt
“Patriotism means to stand by one's country; it does not mean to stand by one's president.”-Theodore Roosevelt
I am very displeased to learn that, since there is no logical reason for that rule to exist; what flavor or mechanical explanation could there possibly be to explain that rule?

A flavorful reason? The first card on the planar deck is the one that you are starting the fight in; that's where the players began their battle. Starting in a phenomenon doesn't make sense in that regard.
Mechanically, it deals with the problem of having a triggered ability occur when the game hasn't started yet. The planer card is flipped before anyone has taken a turn.

I understand, but I still am displeased, especially since the phenomenon in question was reality shaping, and I could have placed a powerful creature onto the battlefield before I had even begun my first turn if that had been allowed.

That's exactly WHY those things aren't allowed.
