I have a Courser of Kruphix on the field. Top card is revealed and it is a scry land. I play the land for turn. Do I scry first, without revealing the top card of the library, or reveal the card and scry then? I've gotten different answers to this question and I want to make sure I'm playing it correctly.
Thanks, Mary
The land enters the battlefield. You immediately reveal the new top card. The scry ability then goes on the stack. As the ability resolves, if you put the card to the bottom, you reveal the new top card immediately.
The top card of your library is revealed at all times. As soon as it changes, you must reveal the new top card.
Pretty much all you need to know about this effect is :
- If you scry of otherwise reorder the top cards of your library, you reveal the new top card after the rearranging is done (but not in the middle of the process, as you manipulate the cards and think; the cards are technically still in their original position in your library at that time). There is a game state before the reordering, and a game state after.
- If an effect makes you draw multiple cards, the rules say that the draws are done one at a time. This means you must reveal the new top card in between each draw.
I'm a former judge (lapsed), who keeps up to date on rules and policy. Keep in mind that judges' answers aren't necessarily more valid than those of people who aren't judges; what matters is we can quote the rules to back up our answers. When in doubt, ask for such quotes.
MadMageQc has it all correct.
Another common interaction with Courser is the RTR shocklands: if you're playing one of those off the top of your library, you need to decide whether you're paying 2 life before you reveal the next card of your library.
Thanks for the replies. I just wasn't sure if the scry would trigger before it was revealed. I'm familiar with the 'play with the top card revealed' otherwise from the oracle of mul daya. I didn't realize with choice the life part with the shocklands, and I do need to know that one. I"m used to showing all my draws with the oracle. The help is appreciated.
