Okay so i got my hands on some urza's filter, so heres my question. With this card out on the battlefield, and lets say i have a Rakdos's Return can i PAY JUST 2 mana instead of 4 for the damage because of urza's filter and still deal 4 damage? OR will i have to tap 4 to do 4 regardless of urza's filter?

When using an X spell with cost reductions, here's how it works:
Announce your intended X. Determine your starting mana cost (in this case, X=4, so the mana cost is 4RB). Apply any additional costs (non here). Apply any reductions (Urza's Filter reduces it to 2RB). If Trinisphere is in play and would apply, apply it now. Pay the final cost (2RB).

Your choice phrasing makes it hard to work out what you are actually asking.
Normally to do 4 damage with rakdo's return you need to pay 4RB. With urza's filter in play it reduce the cost of the spell by 2 so you will end up paying 2BR if you chose x=4.

How to cast a spell with X:
1) Choose a value for X
2) Replace every instance of X on that card for the chosen number.
3) Calculate the total cost: mana cost (including the X that is now the chosen number) plus any cost increases and reductions
4) Generate mana if needed, then pay the cost.
So:
1) You want Rakdos's Return's X to be 4.
2) Rakdos's Return now effectively has "4BR" on the mana cost and effectively says "Rakdos's Return deals 4 damage to target opponent. That player discards 4 cards" on its text.
3) You calculate the total cost as 4BR - 2 = 2BR
4) You generate mana (by tapping lands or whatever), and pay the 2BR.
Notice the value of X is still 4, so it's still 4 damage and 4 discarded cards.
okay thats what i wanted to make sure of. I will be still be doing 4 damage but paying 2 coloress for 4 damage. sweet. just wanted to know., thank you guys
