Hi there.
Im new (I mean very new) to magic the gathering. Its kind of overwelming info about the game. I would like to get some advice if possible:
First: I intend to buy a fat pack and some boosters to start deck building: which collection would be the best (Im between Aether revolt and Origins - Im really strugling here because Origins is not translated to my language but Aether revolt is, which is plus because help introduce friends to the game. But It seems like Origins has a lot of good cards for deck building... Im not sure thought)
Secound: what to read/watch to try and improve game skill? (I found this articles and Im enjoying it so far - especially from the third on = http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/shoulders-giants-2013-08-06)
Third: any other advice about basic strategy material or buying the basic would be much apreciatted.
Thanx guys
I'd suggest you figure out what you like to play. Casual,drafts,standard,modern,commander... figure out what you enjoy. Look over some sets and see if there are any mechanics/cards you enjoy.
Also try to get the most of your starting cards from the same set or sets to have the most familiarity and consistency when playing so you get the feel of gameplay.
This article from Geeks and Sundry has some good information in it - especially about how to choose your colours and the format you would like. Some info may be outdated now but it's still a good read.
Here's some advice that doesn't get mentioned often. It's what I did when i decided to come back to the game after 14 years.
As you probably know by now, you're allowed to have up to 4 copies of each card in your deck. When building your first deck, it can really help to have 4 of each card you're considering including, but as a new player, you don't yet have a good feel for what will be worth buying in multiples. I highly recommend picking up a complete "playset" (4 of each card) of the commons and uncommons in the current set(s). It's relatively inexpensive, at $30-50 or so, and you'll be getting WAY more cards for your money than buying fat packs and other sealed product. The variety of options will help jump-start your deckbuilding ability, and you'll soon get a feel for what your first deck could use to power it up a bit. Then you can confidently buy just the few pricey cards you need from there.
Still, I echo the advice of Serberus_08 above. Once you end up with a deck you enjoy playing, focus on refining and mastering it rather than moving on to something new and different too quickly. Most new players will benefit more by observing their opponents critically than by switching out decks every other game.
