Hey all, looking to buy a few booster boxes to stash in my closet for a few years, and I'm looking to get opinions on what sets look likely to appreciate over time. I have narrowed down the list to:
Return to Ravnica (shocklands, but I have two boxes put away already)
Khans of Tarkir (fetchlands)
Battle for Zendikar (Expeditions)
Oath of the Gatewatch (Expeditions)
Shadows over Innistrad (flavor)
Kaladesh (Masterpieces)
Any advice would be helpful.

masterpieces (inventions and expeditions) really don't seem like a good bet... first of all, they come at a rate of 1 every 144 boosters. so, there's roughly just around 22% chance of seeing one or more inside a box.
sure, some of those will have a lot of value, but as odds of pulling those are REALLY, REALLY low, I doubt it's worth to keep boxes stashed for this reason.
fetchlands from tarkir seems like the safest bet as it's almost impossible that wotc will print a land cycle so powerful is stops people from using fetches, so they'll always be on demand for as long as this game is popular
I agree, and I ended up picking up two Khans boxes for a decent price over the weekend. I'll probably buy one of each of SoI and BfZ just for the flavor alone.

From what I've read...Nothing after RTR is worth holding. They upped the print run of those sets so much that you can still get boxes of RTR for about $90. Just look at the prices of the much sought after shocklands. Some can still be had under $10. How long ago was RTR? 3 years ago?
Khans? Nothing good in there, only the fetches.
INN is the last strong set to pick up. If you want to get a box and hold, Elrich Moon might be worth it. Seems to have a lot of goodies in there for modern.
Sets now are overprinted up the wazoo as previously mentioned (with the exception of masters sets obviously which only have reprints as their best cards and are already overpriced upon release making them poor investments). Enemy Fetchlands will also inevitably drop once reprinted (which is a safe to assume eventuality), so I wouldn't even say Zendikar boxes are worth it at their current price.
Taking the eternal demand for duals and their diminishing available supply due to their inclusion on the RL into account, if you can afford it and find one, I suggest getting a box of Revised asap (currently available at $2600) which will only continue to appreciate in value and more than likely outpace your mutual funds portfolio if left sealed. (I would've said A/B/U, Summer Magic, Foreign black border, Arabian Nights, or Antiquities, but good luck finding sealed boxes of any of those which is virtually impossible and would cost you a fortune even if you could.)
However, if you want to open packs consider a box of Alliances. Why? Because force of will was uncommon back then and boxes have 45 packs (albeit with fewer cards per pack (12 instead of 15) which is still irrelevant considering packs still had 3 uncommons). With 43 uncommons in the set at approximately $700 per box, it's safe to assume you'll open at least 3.134 per box, and quite possibly 6 or more if you're lucky to get your money back making everything else gravy (can you honestly say the same about the frequency odds of pulling rarer high value cards like JTMS or Goyf in their respective sets?...Lest we forget that best Jace is now worth 30% less than original FOWs since the reprint(s). Go figure). Now it's certainly a gamble/lottery as is always the case with opening packs be they individual or packs among a complete box/case, but if you're a nostalgic gambling treasure hunter like me who yearns to smell pack-fresh 20 year old cardboard, the very act of opening such a box and savoring the possibilities would almost make the experience worthwhile on it's own.
Anyhow, the best I can come up with myself is a game in the top 8 of a PTQ back during Urza block in which we were starting game 3 with time already expired, so the tiebreaker rule was that whoever had more life after 3 turns would win. And I lost to... healing salve.

Just passing on my $0.02
Good points, I think RTR was four years ago. Also Khans might be good but only if Frontier becomes a real thing. (actually, if frontier becomes real then I see nothing wrong with picking up a box of bfz and oath)
Conspiracy 2: Take the Crown can be a fun investment down the line. The value is decreasing on a box but if you pull any foil mythics it generally validates the box. Also it's great for drafting with friends at a gathering or GP.

I don't play the format, but I really feel it will pick up heavily in a couple years. Khans has a lot of great cards at lower rarities that i feel will be the closest recent set to Lorwin in that every other common will be worth $3. Obviously not to the same extent but point.
If you're actually looking to make money at this, good luck. I have had some success speculating in M:TG but it's not easy to do. It's nice because it's tax-free, but it's risky as heck. My advice would be instead of buying several boxes of something that's in print now, spend the money on one box of something that had a relatively small print run. I'd love to give advice on a specific set, but it would be irresponsible of me to do so. If i HAD to pick a set for investment purposes, i wouldn't gamble on anything that runs in conventional formats; maybe Unglued or Unhinged.

They just couldn't put 7th edition into Modern because of the card borders? Seriously? Count me out.

From what I can recall, I opened three, maybe four boxes of Ice Age. I don't think I opened as many Alliances boxes. Maybe three? Plus a few packs? I have nine or ten FoW's from that set. I never BST for FoW's at the time, they were considered junk cards. For comparison, the $50 chase card at the time was Balduvian Horde. In other words, the spread on FoW for that set is [u]very[/] solid.
I won't say one way or the other whether it's worth picking up a $700 box for though. I don't want to encourage people to speculate on prices.
