Here's a sentimental question: What's the first card you ever played? Disregarding lands, of course. I mean, what's the first creature you ever slammed down or the first spell you ever slung?
I started with Islands. And I remember Air Elemental out of the 7th edition starter pack being one of the creatures that was super important to me in that first deck I borrowed/was given.

One of these day I have to get myself organizized.
A bit complicated for me, as I first started playing in the middle of a game my roommate at the time asked me to finish for him on his DotP game circa 2010. I had heard of Magic before, and even had some random mono-red starter deck that had been given to me a year or two before, but had never actually sat down and played it. I had no idea what the rules were but managed to learn playing the game through the hints it gave me. I think the card I cast was probably Incinerate to the computer's face.
The first paper card I cast was almost defintiely Goblin Shortcutter, as it was the only card I had a full playset of in the first jumbled mess I made to learn to play with. I quickly graduated to a deck with an actual plan (A vampire tribal thing right after Dark Ascension came out). The first card I played in a true match was Bloodcrazed Neonate
I started with the seventh edition introduction set. They had a test game played out and that is my first game. But I don't remember which side I played.
Yeah it's got to be pretty similar for me land mana elf. Maybe I can't remember there is too many possibilities from my first deck but it's a 1 or two drop.
From my earliest memories in mtg.. the first card I remember putting into play is an apoclaypse set Phyrexian Gargantua, it's when my cousin was still teaching me the basics of how to play mtg. Well, the gargantua cost 6 mana, so there must be others that I've cast before that, just can't remember anymore. Other cards I remember seeing at the table at that time are Living Airship and Death Gazer, but those were controlled by my other opponents, then the player using Death Gazer was out of the game because gazer can't block the airship. We are doing casual multiplayer.
Fog of Gnats. God I loved that card, it just seemed so efficient the second I laid eyes on it. My noob self looked at it, saw a cheap evasive creature that would almost never die (due to the kind of removal prevalent in my kitchen table meta, as I had been borrowing decks to play before I decided to build my own), and proceeded to build a mono black evasion/ kill your dudes deck that was actually kind of ok as a rattlesnake in multiplayer. The whole thing was built around getting gnats into play. I used to windmill slam Feast of the Unicorn onto the gnats (for real), recur the gnats with Unearth (or think I was being super fancy by not paying the echo cost on Bone Shredderand unearthing it), and every time I played the gnats the table would shout "Fog of Gnats!", because it at least one would hit every game, and for a while it was my only deck. I occasionally throw it in EDH decks, and it wears swords like a champ.

The Meaning of Life: "M-hmm. Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations"
Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
Not exactly sure about the first card because the first couple of times I played magic I could barely remember the rules let alone the cards, but two that I remember specifically are Uktabi Drake (off a Forest) and Ornithopter(off of Seat of the Synod).
For me, my first card was Figure of Destiny.
You know what? Let's do your first land too. Mine was a Mountain.

The first card I was super happy to see? Heedless One.

And I think it was...Priests of Norn.
