With shock and volcanic hammer variants generally considered too weak for standard play, and Lightning Bolt generally regarded as format changing, why haven't we seen a simple sorcery speed lightning bolt printed yet? (Like Chain Lightning but without all that extra copy nonsense).
What do you think this would do to the current standard environment? Are they afraid of a modern deck with InstantBolt & SorceryBolt?
It would be fine in standard (I don't know about THIS standard, but in general for standard). That said, I doubt we want chain lightning in modern. 8 bolts for Zoo and UR delver is brutal. Burn is already much better in modern than legacy due to a lack of fast combo and shocklands even WITHOUT chain lightning (or fireblast!). For that reason, I think it's doubtful we'll see it.
EDIT: As a further thought, slow bolt (if it were not just a reprint of chain lightning), would also mean 4 more bolts for legacy burn. They already have 16. (lightning bolt, chain lightning, rift bolt, lava spike). No thanks.
I think Ashley has it right, more 3 damage for 1 mana spells would make the eternal formats more brutal. In a vacuum, I think Standard could handle it, but I doubt Wizards wants to harm their new baby (Modern).
I wouldnt play it to be honest. im not a big fan of sorcery cards that are not wraths. however it would probably be fine in standard. i think lightning bolt would be fine in standard. a creature only bolt would fine as well. all are playable and all would be fine. lightning bolt would make me happier playing standard, i dont care for standard but everything else is too expensive
Sorcery speed is brutal though. It means most decks that are interested in it wouldn't really play it but all the aggro decks would likely be jamming four. Thats where I see it but I dont think it would break anything in modern or legacy. Burn is a good startegy in these areas, but very beatable. And zoo is fine too. Good but very beatable.

I would rather a straight-up reprint of Chain Lightning. The trinket text on it is flavourful and probably matters about as much as Baneslayer Angel's trinket text (i.e. comes up maybe one game in fifty).
Strengthening burn in Modern is IMO a good thing, as it encourages different manabases to 'a few shocklands and then PLAY ALL THE FETCHES'. You might see people running lands like Reflecting Pool and the Temples if burn got a couple of extra tools.
In Legacy, however, I'm a bit more concerned at just how silly burn might get with 24 1-mana 3 damage spells (Bolt, slowbolt, Chain Lightning, Rift Bolt, Lava Spike, Bump in the Night) with Fireblast to go with them. It's not necessarily the case that this deck would be broken, but it would have all of the non-interactivity of burn with ridiculous consistency and games being so similar to each other. Fireblast really does make all of the difference.
As for Standard - Either 'slow bolt' or Chain Lightning would be one of the best cards in the set it was in, but not necessarily one of the best cards in the format. Similar to Doom Blade in power level.
