So I've been watching a lot of the "spellslingers" series from Geek & Sundry, and I've come to the conclusion that I would like to get into Magic. My problem lies in that I am a complete and total noob >_>. I have no experience what so ever and was wondering if anybody could suggest some things I could do to help ease me into this crazy cool world. more specifically, my current understanding goes about as far as the core game play mechanics go. based solely on watching SpellSlingers. As far as deck building, and actual deck management, I am basically clueless. Any tips would be very appreciated. I'm actually heading out today so if anybody could suggest some good things to pick up for a starter, I'd be all ears! thanks so much guys!
The intro packs, especially from the Core Sets are made specifically to be picked up and played by newbies. They're not exactly the most powerful decks, but they're a good place to start.
Draft. friends. A cool and relaxed play group at your lgs, and always remembering that pro play is a myth for 99.9% of the player base, so don't get overwhelmed by this.
Just bought the MTG 2014 game to hold me off till i can save up some cash towards a real deck. it seems like a great way to learn the rules. i've already gotten through the tutorials and beaten the first two enemies in the campaign. very fun actually, I have high hopes for this endeavor anybody know a good place to learn each card types (earth, fire, water, life(good?),death(evil?) strengths and weaknesses?
I second that drafts at your local card shop are a great way to get involved. Just let people know that you're new and they'll usually be pretty helpful. Also, it's a good way to get to know the MTG community in your area.
EDH night if your local store supports it(if not your in the wrong shop lol) could be good to start. You can buy a pre made deck from commander 2013 as a starting point for like 50 bucks. Other then that I would say joining a standard league might be a good idea. Stops the cost from getting out of hand and builds a card pool for you. Drafting is good too. I would avoid playing constructed for a while until your sure magic is something you will enjoy. The cost of constructed is high, especially if you don't know what your doing. I see a lot of new players trying to get right into constructed(standard) and I watch them blow money on cards that are not needed. Or they play standard and spend money on a bunch of cards from a set thats about to rotate. Then the price of their new cards tanks to next to nothing... It's just good advice I think for you to understand the card economy before getting into standard. Otherwise you will be buying a deck for say 200$ then a few months later that same deck isn't worth 20$.
