There are so many that deserve mentioning but that would take a while so I'll name one of my favorite creatures ( and one I don't actually play often) Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind ,what can I say WotC says I'm a nuts and bolts spike and they're right for the most part.
Welder. Recurs Lotuses, Mindslaver, and Memory Jar. And just how many creatures get to say they're Vintage staples? Any deck in that format that can support the single red mana probably runs these guys.
Every once in a while, this thread shows up. But I'm more than hapy to give you my two cents.
These are the highest rated creature cards by color of this moment, counting and evaluating all mentioned opinions of the last 10 years or so (really, it became almost a study for me) and by looking at decklists of the older formats these days (and with a little love for standard as well)...
Blue: Serendib Efreet Still too powerfull to see as a reprint today Morphling The God of mono-blue control and the once-best creature of all time Meloku the Clouded Mirror Second best blue finisher for decks toting blue or just a splash of it Sea Drake Legacy staple that beats even better and faster than Serendib Efreet (which says a lot) Vendilion Clique One of the best techs of last years Tradewind Rider 4 toughness all-round unfair versatality Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir Overrated but most annoying blue legend ever, key lock piece of Scepter-Chant decks Mistbind Clique Faerie staple that puts those decks over the top Master of Etherium Most undercosted blue fatty ever
Black: Dark Confidant Overrated? Def. not! Best walking card advantage Hypnotic Specter One of the best "answer me now or die soon" creatures ever Nantuko Shade Legacy staple in mono-black Tombstalker Best 5/5 creature in the game, with flying to boot Disciple of the Vault Broken (and banned for a reason)
White: Exalted Angel Probably white's best beater ever Academy Rector Expensive enchantments for cheap = extraordinary powerfull Eternal Dragon Die-hard staple in most formats Auriok Salvagers White's best combo-creature ever, Vintage top 8s everywhere Jötun Grunt White's best undercosted fatt Reveillark Latest white powerhouse creature deserving 5 stars Mother of Runes Best white one-drop ever
Green: Eternal Witness Recursable Regrowth couldn't get any better Hermit Druid Combo-critter so powerfull it must be banned in Legacy Golgari Grave-Troll Highest dredge-number = most-played dredge card in vintage Birds of Paradise Best colored mana-generating creature in the game Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary No other card doubles your green mana production this efficient every turn and beats for two if it has to Troll Ascetic Most efficient die-hard creature green has ever seen Call of the Herd Two creatures in one cheap sorcery = green's best green card advantage done "creature style" Terravore Sleeper card, most undercosted green fattie in Legacy right now Protean HulkFlashwas what Hulk did Chameleon Colossus Green's best 4/4 ever Wild Nacatl Most efficient turn 1 beater green has to offer Wild Mongrel Historically seen green's second best creature ever Tarmogoyf Best creature in the game right now, period
In the past polls were set in such threads (around the time of Ravnica). I can remember that these were won by goblin welder when choices were limited, and by psychatog when more options were made available.
I think that since then only tarmogyf can be considered as a contender.
Hypnotic Specter still holds a special place in my heart. I'd say Meloku is strong too. Back when it was type 2, drop a meloku and it's almost a certainty for a GG.

Oona. Meluko 2.0, immune to Terror effects, a ton more power, survives almost all burn... Plus she's got great art. A+
I have a million other favorites, but I'd say cards like Hellkite Overlord, Akroma(s), and other popular Reanimator targets are always going to be "strongest", since this thread isn't too worried about cost.
Otherwise, things get shady. Is Goblin Welder actually a good creature, or just an enabler? In terms of BEING a creaure, he sucks. etc.
omg, cant believe I've just read through all these replies and no one has put THE greatest creature of all time
JUZAMM DJINN !
5/5 for 4 mana single colour ???
you cant beat it
Grinning Demon (who saw little to no play) would like to have a word with you.
Psychatog is great and all, but he's like a grinding station, just a combo piece. He only swings once, and while it's a great swing, he's only a combo piece.
The best:
Arcbound ravager- yes, he only goes in one deck, but that deck would fall apart without him. He defines an archetype, but an acretype that has been going strong throughout block, standard, extended, even type-1 for a while, and would fall apart without him (or is it a her?)
Goyf- If you're running green, and you're not killing people with elves and dragons/grapes, he goes in your deck. He's huge, he's cheap and he's flexible. What more could you ask for?
Dark Confidant is better than Tarmogoyf in my opinion.
But they are both amazing wonderful cards, just play em both!
I think they're about even personally, as they're both great in very different ways, Dark Confidant gives you a great draw advantage and Goyf is just a cheap beast.

Amazing Avy & Sig by mchief111 @ Rising Studios [4/22/11]
In order to evaluate these cards, we can either do it by general usefulness or in their perspective best deck.
If you look at general usefulness, it would probably be Goyf>Confidant>Welder. (Which is in line with their respective prices) This is because Goyf takes very little to use, while Confidant makes you want to lower your CMC, and welder needs a complete deck around him.
However, in terms of their power in their best decks, it would be Welder>>Confidant>Gofy. Welder just wrecks havoc in the right deck. Sure, you need to design around him, but with him active, you can win on the spot, or put you in a position where you can't lose.
