About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
Giant Spider was the Core Set Survivor, the only card to have been printed in every core set in the history of the game. Wizards made a really big deal out of it.
Yes, that's exactly the point that I was making. It doesn't belong in the flavor text, and, as I said, "even playing along, "the wild" actually only has one constant," that is, Giant Spider.
My vote here is for Snapping Drake. To whom do the drakes make these claims? Do they like run and hide when daddy dragon shows up and says all angry "Were you claiming to be a dragon again?"

I enjoyed it, kind of like the M10 Lightning Bolt.
I'll break the tie here in favor of Tar Pit Warrior. "Casual insults made him weep" is a bit too silly, and it doesn't fit the card ability that well either. Casual insults do not equal targetting with spells or abilities.
I also like to imagine that he has a rotating torso (like a metallic graft that fuses his upper and lower body together), so he can spin all around, leveling everything within 20ft of him to rubble.

With none of the artifacts or lands having any flavor text, our last look here is at Beatdown Gold.
Neither choice is super bad, but I think Segmented Wurm is the worse of the two. It's an interesting quote, but a forced flavor fit for this particular card.

A definite divergence in opinion here, but Snapping Drake scoops up the win.
Next: Beatdown Black
Coercion for me. The phrase "you will escape very little" isn't very awe-inspiring, and the entire quote is very B-movie in terms of quality.
I enjoyed it, kind of like the M10 Lightning Bolt.
I vote for Hollow Dogs.

Tar Pit Warrior takes the cake as worst offender.

Raging Goblin gets my vote. It may as well have said, "He just rages and rages and rages...RAGE ON!" More substance, please.

Crash of Rhinos. An inspiring testament to the everlasting endurance and perseverity of love...on a card featuring trampling rhinos. WHAT???
540 Peasant cube- Gold EditionSomething Spicyboring people ruin a party, boars are a party (accessory) to ruin (destruction). Still lame.
I wonder if artists are offended when their art that they worked hard on is paired with a lame pun or flavor text.
Crash of Rhinos = 2
Crashing Boars proves the biggest bore of them all.

That ends Beatdown. Time to start Commander, beginning with Commander White.
Monk Realist for me. The whole phrase sounds corny as hell.
Honorable mentions:
Bathe in Light: ...pretentious, much?
