Who do y'all think is a powerful EDH General? Powerful can encompass a lot of things, like the power of the general itself, the stability of the manabase with the general, the cards that general allows you access to, the abilities of the general, the types of cards you can use to build around it, etc ...
MY vote goes for Merieke Ri Berit - UBW gives you a fairly stable mana base with access to blue's superior counters and draw as well as B/W's superior removal suite. In addition, Merieke costs a mere 3 mana so you don't mind replaying her 3 or 4 times, and is a great way to steal other generals. They even get punished for killing her! In addition, there are tons of ways to combo with her (Thousand-Year Elixir and Intruder Alarm, I'm looking at you.) Although maybe I'm biased as she is my general.

For UBW, I would much prefer Sharuum the Hedgemon. Much bombier, a body that can actually deal 21 damage eventually, and her ability is always relevant.
As for EDH discussion, there is a whole section of the forums now dedicated to it.
I personally like Dranlu, Lich Lord. You get some cool counterspells and you get access to some of the best cards ever printed.
I also like Sliver Queen since she lets me play a really expensive mana base and she looks cool.

I've recently made my first EDH deck, using Doran. 3-cost only, so with green's mana-acceleration you can relyably play him from the RFG zone as early as turn 4 or 5, and white/green offer plenty of life gain, damage prevention and, of course, creatures with high toughness.
I am just starting to get into EDH, and in preparation for doing so, I went over to the EDH forums and was looking for most competitive generals to make my deck on. Here were some I saw:
Zur the Enchanter
Intet the Dreamer
Mayael the Anima
Braids, Cabal Minion
Scion of the Ur-Dragon
Horde of Notions
Erayo, Soratami Ascendant
Grand Arbiter Augustin IV
Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind
I personally am building Braids.dec for a strong 1v1 duel matchup (what the meta is in my local area).

I'm bad at magic, you're bad at magic, and Level 4 Pro Ari Lax is terrible at magic.
I personally am building Braids.dec for a strong 1v1 duel matchup (what the meta is in my local area).
Hmm... EDH is much more balanced with multiple players- with two players, it becomes Highlander Vintage, with "Who can combo off first?". With multiple players, you have to watch your back while you attack, and if somebody is going down, somebody else becomes the new target, etc... It's more exciting imho.
Still, Zur is definitely one of the top generals. Sygg is actually pretty damn good in multiplayer EDH as well.
I think I'd love to build a Braids deck eventually... Pox effects ftw in multiplayer!!!
Dralnu is by far my favorite general and I think he is one of the most powerful. In EDH you get to play tons of high costing back breaking spells, and with Dralnu you get to play them twice. He also has the two best colors for ridiculously broken spells to aid you.
I would have to say Zur and Scion are close to as strong if not stronger though.
It seems to me that Sliver Overlord would be the most powerful general since you can tutor up your deck and steal other slivers (you would of course have type changing cards in the deck).
I haven't played the format though, so I wouldn't know for sure.

I am looking for Date Stamped promos from Khans of Tarkir block so I can finish my set. Check my wants if you have any.
Currently offering 2 non-foil Kolighan's Command for a Date Stamped foil!
Thing is, Sharuum is much better than Zur.
With Zur you have to resolve him, he has to live a turn, then you have to attack. Usually more than once.
With Sharuum all she has to do is resolve and she probably has already made your Intuition/Gifts completely lethal.
There is also the Sculpting Steel/Sharuum/Disciple combo that cannot be overlooked.
My Duel EDH deck is Teferi, mage of zhalfir and he's amazing for a MUC deck. 7 hits with your general is never hard when they can't keep a permanent on the field.
Multiplayer I have Oona, UB control, Ghost council midrange and Rafiq aggro.
Rofellos, if the banned list is irrelevant. As far as legal generals go, Gaddock Teeg is pretty brutal, cause it makes a lot of the cards in the format dead. Jhoira is pretty damn saucy, too.

OMG you stupid ****ing n00b... stfu and stop playing mtg because youre t3h suck!oneone
I hear whipsers about Rofelloss being banned, and I'm not certain as too why
Because having played him in my Verdeloth deck, I've found turn two Rofellos is the nuts. You're investing one card, and if you hit your turn three land drop you have six mana. Next turn? At least eight. Rofellos simply allows for ridiculously degenerate mana ramping without the cost of multiple cards like the typical artifact acceleration engines. (And you can run those, too!)
I've had to tangle with Sharuum before, and that was rough. he cast mindslaver, cracked it on the person to my right, then momentary blinked sharuum and cracked it on me. Player on my right didn't survive through another turn, but I managed to catch the flashback-blinked-mindslaver. Took two of my turns in a row, knocking out two other players in the mean time, as well as getting the academy ruins lock on me.
I've been a big fan of Verdeloth, but he's certainly not the most powerful. Don't get me wrong, he's really strong (especially with turn two Rofellos and a bunch of acceleration) because you just ramp mana and cast him. Attack, find some way to get him killed (Maybe Miren, the moaning well) and cast him again.
Scion of the Ur-Dragon was alright, certainly better before I realized I couldn't use his ability more than once per turn. He kinda became a dragon-reanimator deck.
Ashen Monstrosity; Akuta, Born of Ash; Glitterfang; Oni of Wild Places; Shinen of Fury's Fire; Nether Traitor; Demigod of Revenge; Dominus of Fealty. Swing for 29 points of Hasty damage, 10 of which is Evasive.
Chameleon Colossus; Eternal Dragon; Yoesi, the Morning Star; Oversoul of Dusk; Balefire Liege; and Divinity of Pride are available as blockers/next-turn swingers.
Schweet.
A lot of those can't be played since they are not black.
We had a Captain Sisay deck in our group for a while. Once Sisay comes online, the deck was incredibly difficult to beat. And the deck made Untaidake, the cloud keeper playable. And good. And that's just frightening.

A card game about Presidents. Stabbing each other. With knives.
Lin Sivvi is still my favorite general. Lets you combo off with Standing Troops + En Kor for infinite toughness (Animal Boneyard, Diamond Valley, Avenger en-Dal, Condemn, Proper Burial, Worthy Cause, Life Chisel, Miren the Mouning Well and Starlit Sanctum all confer infinite life). There are rebels that kill red and black creatures automatically, and flying rebels with pro-red and pro-black (saving you from Scion, Zur, Iname, etc...).
Plus she can search for (and then return to the deck) Crib Swap, allowing Lin Sivvi to remove any general from play (sans pro-white or shroud) once you get her out. 3 turns after you can first bring her out, she can do it every turn again and again...
For only 4 mana with Heartstone too.
(Assuming no mana accel or dump with 1 land drop a turn) Sivvi can land you that infinite life combo on turn 5 every game, assuming you have one of 9 cards in your deck in your hand.
Of course she searches for other rebels who can search for the above cards as well (if needed).
Effectively, Lin Sivvi can have you...
Gain 2 life (Aven Riftwatcher)
Pacify a creature (Bound in Silence)
Undo all life loss from a single turn (Children of Korlis)
Create a huge shield (Cho-Manno)
Make Flying Defense (Various)
Remove any Black or Red creature from the game
Remove any creature from the game (Crib Swap)
Basilisk any Creature (Vanguard)
Get plenty of attackers (various)
Flank tons of 1/1 tokens with Knight of the Holy Nimbus and various "Blaze of Glory" remakes
Untap all tapped creatures you control (Reveille Squad)
Block creatures with Shadow (Zealot il-Vec)
Get infinate toughness and, therefore, infinite life
EDIT: I just read the errata on Sivvi. No crib swap...oh well. Still 4/4 lifelink champion isn't bad.
If you want a complete boss, play Karn. I know I know... colorless blah blah no counters, but hear me out. Your 36 non basic land mana base is actually crazy, it can seriously win you through really tough spots. Each and everyone of your lands does some utility.. Now isn't that crazy? Karn Unique ability alows one to build a Combo control - ramp deck. and still play beats. Since you don't have to mana Fix, you can go hard ramp, running 15 of the best ramp artifacts in the format. With my decklist ( which is nearly optimal ) I can consistanly get like 8 mana by turn 4, or another 50% of the time 3. and 33 % turn 2. Most of the combos are 1-2 Cards and are amazing cards anyway - rings of the brighthearth. your only danger is rofle, cus he can ramp faster than you. lol... I suggest Karn, Silver Golem
I'm under the Understanding that Braids is the most powerful {debate maybe}........and banned correct?
Braids can get down a fairly hard lock on turn 4 or even earlier, and that's just ridiculous. And yes, she is banned. But then, this thread is a 9-month old necro from when Rofellos was the banned general.
It seems to me that Zur is still the best out there for duels. Such a nutty deck, all that synergy. Uril isn't half bad either, since he can easily deal 21 damage in one hit, but just fails to counter/*** effects.
lol, i love all the hacks who vote for their general even when it's crap.
azami is very good. rofellos gets a lot of press but thb he's quite killable. dralnu seems sick in 1v1, but not so good in multiplayer. sasaya is an oft-overlooked general who can win very quickly. Uril is probably the best beater-general. erayo and teferi are some of the best control generals. maga is solid. zur is good. braids is banned mostly for being unfun, not overpowered.
personally i went with sygg, river cutthroat, although idk if he's the best. however, there's a definite tendency in edh to play nothing but bomb spells (lol, i can't believe people think sharuum is the best general... :D) and sygg is very cheap and can generate loads of card advantage, especially in multiplayer, and has access to a very nasty combination of black kill-cards and blue counters. let's see how sharuum does after i hinder her onto the bottom of her library also, he can take full advantage of the evil arena of the ancients, which screws 95% of other edh decks hard.

Jhoira of the Ghitu is probably one of the most fun. Turn 8-Untap, time stretch, Insurrection anyone?
Zur, the Enchanter is the best 1v1 IMO, just because of the insane synergy with the rest of his deck.

though now they are hating on my Kresh the Bloodbraided and Oona, Queen of the Fae (though that one because it is tribal merfolk/fae)
