Do I think Planeswalkers are going to harm Magic? Not really. Do I think they're necessary? Not really, but a lot of things aren't necessary in Magic, but they exist anyway to create diversity and usually enrich the general concept of the game. To me, it is just another fold to explore and exploit in the game of Magic. While I don't think that they're necessary to Magic as a whole, I think that they will be interesting to play in limited formats, although their constructed uses will likely just be annoying as the top Planeswalkers with ridiculous abilities and built in strategies will pester specific kinds of decks.
All in all, I play by the tools and the rules provided by Wizards. If this is what they present as being available, then I will take that into account when playing on a competitive level.
I'm not concerned. If Wizards wasn't trying to innovate and bring new things to the game...then I'd be concerned. But this is Wizards doing what they're supposed to be doing, people: keeping the game fresh and interesting.
For all the whining about Wizards "running out of new ideas", you'd think people would be a little more appreciative when Wizards comes up with a new idea.
They thought that Time Spiral, Coldsnap, Mirrodin, Affinity and Kamigawa would have been fresh and interesting. Turns out they totally did the opposite and they have heavy regrets for doing just that.
I'm a little concerned. Not too much but all this Lorwyn hype is striking a cautionary chord in my spine.

Gavin. I totally know where you are coming from. I hope that I can inform you as to my personal perspective. I personally think that the *feel* of the game is of the utmost importance. Play testing the planeswalkers doesn't feel right. The mechanic really feels off. I had hoped that they could have done planeswalkers right and they would have felt natural in the setting of the game, but as they are now they really don't fit. I truly hope that the planeswalkers will come and go and won't be a permanent card type in the game. As a poster linked above, I think that cartoon perfectly sums up how it feels in the game.

I voted who cares. I play almost completely casually and I don't care how the Planeswalkers affect the game. I'll build decks to use and abuse them and move onto the next new thing.

i am mildly concerned because WotC doesn't know how to make good cards. they should learn from the champs that were allowed to create cards ( aka Shadowmage and Avalanche Rider)

Need I remind you that the last time WotC let "others" make a set, we had Homelands.
Furthermore, I would like to see your proof that WotC "doesn't know how to make good cards." That is a very bold statement... and, in my opinion, inaccurate.

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.
I feel that Wizards knows what they're doing, but that they are just overcomplicating things a bit too much. Personally, I think that making them legendary creatures instead of having to create a whole new type would make the whole thing easier to grasp.
That said, anybody else here think that some of these planeswalker's abilities are a bit too powerful? I mean, it's like getting a free spell every turn! I guess they're meant to be balanced by the attacking the planeswalkers, but I think that they're still a little too powerful for my liking.
I do like Garruc though. Too bad the Karoos will be rotating out of standard. Good thing I don't play in tournaments.

I think the power issue was balanced by the low starting loyalty in those we've seen. They're not very hard to kill. Against most aggro decks, it's more like one of the abilities with a little lifegain attached.

My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours! EXPLAIN THAT!
Not concerned at all. WotC knows what they are doing.
It's not like we have a choice. I'm not quitting the game because of planeswalkers. And I think they learned their lesson from Mirrodin.
Overall, I don't really like the planeswalkers, mostly because IMO they really don't do anything that enchantments are already capable of. But that isn't any reason to shout apocalypse. If there's anything wrong with planeswalkers, it's that they're underwhelming (at least for me). They're not really bad for the game overall--that could only be possible with extremely broken cards, like Tolarian Academy and... almost anything with affinity for artifacts. lol
I don't get how people can say that WotC is running out of ideas after seeing planeswalkers. It is one of the most unique things WotC has ever done... well after split cards... and I guess hybrid mana... oh yeah, and equipment. So tell me again how constant game changing innovations would lead people to believe that WotC is running out of ideas, because I just don't understand that thought process.
i feel wizards in running out of ideas to tell you the truth, so plainswalkers are being made, i mean, how long can you keep coming up with 200 different card names at a time, 3 different set names, novels, and all the other all the creatures and instants and sorceries...with different abilities and all? i think magic will die soon, sad to see it go though
So you drop the novels.
Nah, it's really not that hard to come up with that stuff. Most of a set is variations of the same things that've been done before. Card names are also not too terribly difficult, as each world can have made-up names for the various groups of people.
There's obviously work put into it so the names aren't too contrived or repetitive, but the depth of Magic is great. I firmly believe MaRo when he says there's enough potential in Magic for it to go on for long, long time.
If Magic dies, it'll be from a lack of player support.

I don't think they do anything, good or bad, for the game itself. I just find them utterly uninteresting...and honestly, kinda 'cheap'.
They add another, at-all necessary?, level of complexity to the game that didn't exist before.
Why did these have to exist? I just can't think of a reason other than 'Hey, we need a Gimmick for the new set!' Someone please enlighten me. Seriously.

I think this describes my feelings perfectly. It's just a fifth wheel. But it doesn't show WotC's lack of originality.
