Hey guys I saw the Bay Area one so lets get started on this. Post your information below Nd say hi.
I play MTGO, and for paper I play limited, pauper, deciding between modern and standard.
Will make my decision after next set. Most likely to the modern route for stability but I might go for standard for the easy fnm wins and easy prize pool of 5-10 packs depending on 1-4th place.
I haven't found a LGS but I was thinking about Shuffle & Cut, or the new shop Card Addiction. Will probably play at a couple of their tournaments and decide how fun and nice it is and how fair. I know some places give out practically nothing for their prizes. Like $4 store credit for first place with a $3 entry fee lol.
Not all of us. I have been playing in Costa Mesa California at a Denny's (we have moved from one to another after the old on closed down) off of the 405 freeway and Harbor. We are a casual group of players who mostly play casual, but enjoy the occasional draft, Planechase, EDH, and what not.
We have a core group of about 8 - 12 players, and we even have a facebook group, The Harbingers (https://www.facebook.com/groups/103437954507/). Hit me up here, or drop by our page, or even just show up randomly at Denny's. You are welcome to join us! We start around 7pm-ish (if no one is there & you show up at 7pm, don't fret, hang out. We are ALWAYS there, usually minimum of 3 - 4 players, but usually more) and go to around midnight/1am (sometimes later if a group game is taking a while).
Sounds fun. Why do you guys hang out at a Denny's compared to just any LGS. I played at the costs Mesa women's club for about 5-6 different PTQs before which is about 10 minutes from my house. When Theros comes out ill be doing either standard or modern. Haven't really made a choice. Need to call some LGS to see what they host. Glad to know there are some Oc players on here.

At the time that we were getting the group together (6 or 7 years ago), there were no card shops in the area. The closest shops were in Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Laguna Hills, etc... Soon after we formed and were playing at another local Denny's, Majestix opened up. We kept our group together because we're a bunch of casual/legacy players who have just found a Denny's to be a great spot - unlimited refills, we occupy the back quarter of the restaurant, and it's not a LGS that's been swamped. We trust each other w/ trades, whereas a shark can be found Friday nights.
We're just 1 big happy family; hang together, play together, & mob together. We go to other LGS's for release/pre-release events. You should come by one night & check it out. We play from around 7pm - 1am, the only surviving Denny's in Costa Mesa - off of Harbor & the 405 freeway.
p.s. - there has always been OC players. This is one of the hubs of Magic: SCGA and Women's Club (where Scott Laraby got his start)
Not to derail the thread too much, but do any of you know of an LGS that stamps cards for the prerelease?
Without calling any out, I've been to three different ones where I have either seen people cheat or had very good reason to suspect cheating. Even people walking around asking if they had <X> card they would trade, before the matches started (and not cards for other formats, things like Allies in Zendikar or Shatter in Scars of Mirrodin, etc.).
Ay! Dope thread. SoCal people are mostly stoners, so thats why we have 8 posts in this thread lol
Stoogeslap, I may know you if you used to play at Majestix, but I don't think you did (at least your posts indicate the contrary). Majestix is my original LGS, still go there whenever I'm in town. Do your know any of the We Love TED guys? Clay Balzer, Jacob Kory, Justin Akiama, Chuck Madla, to name a few?

So I just discovered this thread. Suffice to say from my location, there's no LGS I can get to without running headlong into ****ty SoCal freeway traffic on a weekday night. So the FNM scene doesn't do it for me.
I do judge comp REL events when my schedule allows. Unfortunate that they're all in the Costa Mesa Women's Center, that place is awful for large events :/

By any chance is your LGS Monstore?
I'm currently looking for an LGS. I used to always go to Frank and Sons for my stuff and believe me when I say that is a HUGE hassle. That being said, I'm trying to be more local now (just found an LGS within walking distance).
I feel like this thread's spacial area might be too broad (I feel the same about the Bay Area, though, honestly). I live in Downtown LA currently. I'm able to travel 5 to 10 miles for Magic, but I could never see myself going anywhere near Orange. And there's a decent number of locations available near my area (6+). The problem seems to be that most of the players don't frequent these here boards.

I'm officially proposing we retire the word "insane" from the MtG vocabulary.

This is true. I live in the Inland Empire and drive 35 mi. to the Monstore in Montclair. However unless there is a Grand Prix Trial or Invitational Qualifier and I have the time, I won't venture out to Los Angeles or the greater area.

We actually used to host tournaments until WotC decided to limit support to game stores. Since then our focus has been 100% casual.
I'm not affiliated with The Harbingers but I can understand wanting to host gatherings at a neutral location such as a Denny's instead of a LGS.
