Looking for a group to do some play testing as well as bouncing around different deck building ideas. I primarily play Standard but might possibly be jumping into Modern as well. I usually play at Ronin's in Castro Valley or Galaxy Games in Dublin and the only times I really get to test is Tuesday free standard at Galaxy Games. Other than that is FNM tournaments and a win a box tournament at Galaxy on Sundays. I've been finding this meta very exciting and fluid but at the same time because of that I also want to play test my deck ideas as much as possible. I just recently finished building an Esper Control deck that I think is good but would need to play test against several different decks to really put together a solid sideboard and make any adjustments. PM me if you're in the area and are just really looking to play some games of MTG or deck building!
My name is Doug and I live in Vallejo, and can host small casual groups. Looking to play Vintage until I get enough standard cards together. Not really into EDH.
I haven't played since Zendikar. Even then I wasn't all that good because I had no friends that wanted to buy/build their own decks, so I knew all their decks. I got destroyed anytime I went to Eudemonia. It didn't occur to me until later that I would benefit from religiously studying every card, as opposed to just the ones I had. I just enjoyed the artwork and playing with my friends. I have one Vintage deck at the moment, and I'm looking into buying more cards soon. I have a buddy coming over Monday to school me so maybe he'll loan me a deck or two. I'm 28.

Hey Doug,
Welcome. Vallejo is pretty far out, how's the whole magic scene there?
Vintage is also a sweet format, but expensive too. The only place local that I know that hosts vintage is Eudemonia every month. It's either 10 or 15 proxies allowed.
Have you considered or tried legacy at all? High power level like Vintage, but I feel it's a bit more diverse and cheaper (Never thought I'd say legacy was cheap!)
Legacy looks doable. Just looked it up. Seems a bit more fair than Vintage. Now I wish I didn't sell all my cards. Maybe it's best I did though, as the majority were from a garage sale.
I'm having trouble finding players in the area, but wal-mart seems to have grown their MTG stock over the last few years.

Hey there! Welcome to the area. Your meta is a lot like mine since you're honestly 15-20 mins from me. Eudo is the only place for Vintage. For Legacy, you have: Black Diamond Games in Concord for the last Sunday of every month, Great Escape Games in Sac every second Sunday of every month, and Eudo every Monday and occasionally a real Legacy event monthly there as well.
If you get into Legacy, I am definitely looking for a play test group for GP Tacoma.

Hi doug. Have you checked out the Card shop in napa? Hall of Gamerz does monday modern, tuesday standard, and friday draft. after draft on fridays sometimes we fire a 2nd event.
theyre under new management at a new location called Forgotten Path Games now. Doing pretty well. Thier schedule is modern monday standard wednesday then they run both formats plus draft on friday nights. You can find 'em on facebook too.
Hey all. This is my first post here, so let's get the intro stuff out of the way. My house (and usual summer location) is in El Cerrito, but my primary location is Stanford. I play Limited, Casual, Cube, and occasionally Commander.
I'm really looking forward to the MM2 release, and I want to get some physical drafting in with my friends, but I'm unfortunately busy on the 22-24th and of course CFB doesn't work for the 29-31th. If anyone knows of some other shops around here which will be running MM2 events that would be great (closer to Stanfod would be great, but I'm interested in considering anything Caltrain+BART reachable).

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.
I haven't heard of that place, but I'll keep it in mind. I've been to Olde World Games in Vacaville a few times though.
Driving up 80 on Fridays is so not what you want to be doing
I live in Vallejo as well, and end up going to Antioch for standard and just hanging out on Fridays.

Galaxy Games is within ~0.5 miles of the Dublin BART station. I don't recall if they are running any MM2 events outside of this weekend, but if they are, they probably fit well into your requirements.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero

I went there once, the place in Antioch to pick up some sleeves and the atmosphere was welcoming. There was a draft going on but I didn't stick around.

I went to Galaxy Games today and the store is amazing. I am extremely big on customer service and atmosphere and I haven't any complaints about this store. Large selection of Magic cards, the owner is a really nice guy to have a conversation with, and the people who play are really nice. I came in second at the six man casual Legacy event, and I think the fellas there were being nice to me by not absolutely destroying me. I have a feeling they do this for all the noobies. Any way, it was nice meeting ExpiredRascals and his friends. I'll be there more often, y0!
A new game store opened up in Livermore called Wolf Pack Games. They seem friendly, and want to support Magic, but are just getting off the ground with their inventory. FNM last week was just a small 3 round MM15 draft.

I was unimpressed when I dropped by there. While their price on single packs was generally reasonable, their box prices were on the high side (and in one case, higher than buying every pack therein individually); they also had a very poor singles selection (lacking here is somewhat expected, but I've seen two other store openings at this point, and both made sure to have a selection on the shelves prior to opening).
If it were the only shop in the area, I might try to cultivate its growth, but it's pretty bad to not lead with their best foot forward when there's a strong shop with a compelling playerbase just 15 minutes away (Galaxy Games) and an established non-playing store half a mile away (Fantasy Books & Games).
In general it just felt like they hadn't really thought through their business.

I don't think they really know what they are doing with Magic at this point, and my impression was that none of them had any prior experience with the game before opening the store. It's literally a block from where I just moved, so I hope it succeeds, but you are right.
I haven't gone to Galaxy in Dublin yet, what formats are most popular there? What are the typical turnouts? Spikey or casual?

Galaxy fits casual and competitive, but not really cutthroat. To clarify: they have some very strong players, but it's generally not really the cutthroat "do whatever it takes to win" kind of player. It has some very strong Limited players, so it's a great place to cut your teeth if you're trying to get into drafting (since you can get good and friendly feedback and see what others do), and a half dozen judges who tend to be available if you have any questions in or outside of a game. My own involvement is primarily with their Limited and Legacy crowd (and judging, of course), but they have weekly support for Standard (Tuesday and Friday), Modern (Thursday), Legacy (Saturday), Draft (Wednesday and Friday), and Sealed (Saturday), along with some Sunday events (I believe it's Standard/Modern win-a-box events, but I'm going off sketchy memory).
There is a healthy EDH community there, but I've kinda drifted away from the format, so I can't comment much on it.
Events vary size based on format and how popular the most recent set is. 20-35 drafters and the same for Standard is not unusual for FNM. Other days tend to be a bit more tame.
I really recommend you come and check it out for a draft.
