Hi there. I am not going to pretend to know anything about Magic, please be nice
My brother has very recently started playing Magic and I would like to get him a birthday present Magic related.
This is all I know: he has MTG Game Night and also red, black, blue, green, white decks. So my question to you lovely people is what can I get him please? Is there something that no Magic player can do without? I don’t know what kind of deck he is wanting to build - are there any packs I can buy for him without knowing this?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Sorry if I have got the terminology wrong - I’m trying! Thank you so much.
Many here would be glad to help. Firstly though, what are you wanting/willing to spend, what is your budget for the gift? That may make it able for us to narrow down your search. I'd gladly make recommendations at that point, as I am sure others too.

Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)

Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
My suggestion is: it'd be really hard to buy him particular cards, without knowing what formats he plays. With that in mind, I'd consider buying him an accessory, like a nice deck box or play mat. With that, you don't need to know so much about the game as much as his personality and what he finds cool. Like, maybe he likes dragons or nature or ferrets or whatever (the Starcitygames Creature Collection is good for this!)
- The artist Noah Bradley sells some amazing, striking playmats on his site.
- Originalmagicart.com has some playmats with licensed art that are a bit pricier (~$40).
- If you have a high resolution image, you could get a custom playmat on Inked Gaming...I know one guy who has a picture of his daughter on a playmat.
- You can also browse through playmats on eBay, though sometimes there you get unlicensed ones printed in China with less quality. Could be good if he's really into anime, though.
It's dangerous collecting all these links because now I want a new playmat myself...
There is a new set coming out called War of the Spark, becuase it hasn't been released yet he shouldn't have any already. Specifically for newer players, packs tend to exciting.
Rule of thumb, if you don't know what to get a Magic player and don't want to ask them what cards they need for a deck they're building, just get them booster packs from the latest set.
If you can't wait until War of the Spark actually releases on May 3, you could get him packs from either of the two recent sets, Guilds of Ravnica or Ravnica Allegiance.
Deck building kits are bad, you're better off with boosters. With your budget a booster box might be too expensive, but I would look into getting two "fat packs" instead. They're boxes that comes with a bunch of boosters and lands. The newest sets are Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Alliance, and War of the Spark (coming out next week) so look into purchasing those.
Also if you can, buy from a local card store rather than online (unless you have to). Supporting a local store is always a plus.
Some very good suggestions above. Accessories or boosters would be great gifts. I've been playing for 25 years and I still love to open boosters.

don't get him boosters or cards, do get him accessories. especially things like playmats or art books. basically the best mtg gifts are the ones that won't become added to a box somewhere

You can search through playmats on stores like Coolstuffinc or Amazon.
Other sources of nice playmats:

Is this something that goes along with the cards he already has or is it separate?
