I would like to start building a first deck. I would like to play current models/standard where only the most recent cards are used as I dont really have the desire to sift through a million mtg cards from previous years. I already have a decent supply of Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance and several of the planswalker decks from these releases. Ive preordered 2 boxes of War of Spark and a booster box and the 2 planswalker decks for spark. I'm not in a hurry and I dont want to waste money on stuff is older than Guilds of Ravnica since everything else will be obsolete soon. I also have the 4 challenger decks that were released a few days ago.
Given this knowledge of my situation what would you guys recommend. I'm still just learning this game. Ive probably only played 5 or 6 games total.
The Challenger Decks are meant to be a starting point for Standard in and of themselves. Other than that your best bets are to participate in Draft (this teaches you good deckbuilding, gets you useful cards, and is just fun) or to look up decklists that appeal to you and buy the requisite singles from a reputable web store like CardKingdom or a game store near you.
Yeah I like the Challenget decks but they are only going to be useful for a few more months then the cards become obsolete for standard. I like them in that they are a great way to learn how to play. I would be interested in draft play. I will have to see when the next time my local store does that.
My question about draft play is, is everyone drafting to win or do they pick cards that are worth the most? I mean, I understand if a $15+ card is in the pack it's probably going to be taken first. I dont want to buy all those packs and miss out on the valuable cards because I am not familiar with the cards worth. What do you think?
First off buying packs/boxes are a massive waste of money because you are always getting less than what they are worth. It's always recommended to buy singles, especially if you know what you want.
Draft is a good way to learn the game since it teaches you how to deck build and evaluate cards. There's no right way to draft, whether picking money cards or not, but the general rule is to stick with two colors and prioritize removal spells.
I would look into playing Magic Arena since it's a F2P game. It's good practice and it'll help you decide what you like to be able to purchase in real life.
My advice would be to draft until you can get a good collection and understanding of the fundamentals. If you're not interested in spending money on cards that will rotate in the fall, I would avoid standard until then. Especially if you can find a store that can regularly fire drafts
Arena is also a great free to play option
