hi im new to mtg so forgive the dumb questions. my cousin just sent me a box full of old cards to get me started. my queation is this: are there reprints in the current standard meta? does mtg reprint any cards ever? i want to find out if any of these cards can be used in the standard meta. if so, is there a list of reprints i can view? i searched the web but found nothing. thanks in advance.
Old cards are frequently reprinted (there's currently quite the hype about the shocklands having a second reprint in Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance, for example). But there's only a few if any per set. So expect no more than a handful of your old cards to be Standard legal.
As for a list, you can use the gatherer advanced search function or some other search engine to list all Standard legal cards (Format="Standard"; about 1300 cards currently, basic lands included) and then simply go by set to find the reprints. Those are the ones with several sets listed.
Edit:
If your cards are sorted by set, you can modify the search by including the set name in "Expansion" along with the format being "Standard" to get all the standard legal reprints in that set.
My answer is don't worry about it. You probably are not going to play at FNM with a deck from those cards; very few reprinted older cards are good enough for standard. If you want to play Casual, you don't need to worry at all, and if you want to play EDH, then that's Eternal so you also don't need to worry.

Except for core sets, which came back last year. Fully half of a core set is reprints.
Well... yeah... but what percentage are reprints from any given set? The OP simply states "old cards" so we have no idea what sets/era they're from. They could (unlikely) be ABUR cards or Kamigawa block or M12 cards. Could they simply be old as in MP or damaged Amonkhet cards?
The OPs idea of "old" is mostly likely not the same as my definition of "old" or yours.
