So after coming back a week later to the gaming goat the owner is throwing a farewell party with people playing in the back and snacks. They got robbed last week, with the entire store basically being cleaned out. I'm seriously hoping they find the guy who stole from that place.

Sorry to hear that happened to a LGS, especially this close to Xmas.
I hope that they find the person responsible.
Yeah, the owner is going to be looking for a job and I'm hoping he gets one where he can continue to do what he loves. You don't run a local game store unless you've got the drive and passion to make it a personal project.

Sorry to hear that. Scumbags are everywhere unfortunately. What was stolen? If it was gaming merchandise you are probably looking at someone that frequents the store. Any players/patrons recently stop coming after the theft?
Hope they find them and hope the owner stays afloat. Best wishes.

Oh, that's rough. My LGS got robbed this year, too. The moron broke a window, grabbed some card binders, and tried to sell them at another LGS, so at least he got caught. I only wish your thief is the same kind of idiot.
that's an awful thing to hear, I hope they catch the person who did it. Having stores close sucks, I had one within a 45 minute drive due to the owner finding it not profitable enough (mostly due to being within a geographical area that had a lot of stores, not necessarily the city itself but being in an area that's really close to a lot of larger stores). so I know how much it sucks losing a store
It's also the only place that was close enough for me to attend FNM. I hadn't attended for a year and a half because of one bad set after another, and was going to get back into going now that the game was looking better. I think the next closest place is Grognard Games.

I punch in Elgin IL and 19 stores pop up within 20 miles of Elgin, 30 within 25 miles. I know traffic is bad up there. (Unless you don't have a car I suppose.)
For comparisons sake I live on the other side of the state and my nearest LGS is 20+ miles. You live in the Chicago metro area, you can find a spot, look around. Again sorry for your LGS loss, but it looks like you have options. If you can't find somewhere up there, you aren't looking hard enough. Branch out, you'll find somewhere.
PS: Sorry I know I'm probably coming off as harsh. I don't know your exact situation. I wish I had the options you may (or may not) have available. Good luck in your search, and again I hope they catch the crook.

Oh yeah, there's plenty of choices, that is for sure. It's my commute that is the problem more than anything as I got an hour to hour and fifteen minute commute to work. Being five minutes from an LGS was a rare blessing.

I'm not really sure how insurance for non sealed, frequently traded cards work. I'm sure they could (and definitely should have been) insured for sealed product since the value is pretty easy to point to via MSRP.

There are insurance plans (and even entire insurance companies) specifically for protecting collectibles merchandise like an LGS's singles inventory.

He might be able to fall back to the Gaming Goat in Schaumburg if he's looking to stay in the LGS scene.
The FLGS in a neighboring city was robbed earlier this year. The thieves stole several unopened booster boxes of Pokemon TCG. They left everything else in the store, including unopened booster boxes of A25 and Iconic Masters (which were sitting next to the Pokemon boxes).
I am sorry to hear about your local store. Thievery is a very real and punishing crime. Hopefully the cops can track the scum bag down!
I used to go there too when I visited my brother in Elgin and all of the individuals in that store and the owner were nothing but kind-hearted. I really hate that people find it in their heart to do heinous things like this. Stores may have to start putting hidden cameras in LGSs for reasons like this.

This really sucks Colt. I really hope they can find the thieves. Be on the lookout on craigslist, etc. etc. Sadly enough, I know exactly what it feels like to lose the best LGS I've ever gone to (played since 1994).
My store closed down a few years ago. They had free FNMs, good prices, cool people, a more competitive than average scene, and HUGE FNMs. They ended up shutting down due to poor business decisions. Nobody knows how good they have it until they've lost it.

This reminds me of a recent YouTube video that Cure for the Common Game posted regarding his thoughts on Magic Arena and the Local Game Store (LGS):
The reason why I want to talk about Magic Arena is because it directly affects us even though we may not think it does. So I downloaded Magic Arena the other day and played through the tutorial, played a few games, probably seemed like a really good deck at the time with Blue / Red Shenanigans. But anyway, it still occurs to me that I still have an MTGO account that I haven't logged onto in about two to three years but it scared me. I'm not gonna lie, it scared the life out of me because it's quick, it's easy, and I'm gonna kinda argue that it's not free. Yeah you can download it for free while grinding daily packs but the way Magic: The Gathering works as a whole (and you know this) is that the more cards you have the more you want to play. That scared me and I'll tell you why that scared me because of the fate of the Local Game Store (LGS).
When I started playing Magic the LGS didn't exist since we all met up at college or late at night ya know a 24 hour fast food joint, somebody's house, cause I remember when I started playing my friend Don had a newborn and started playing at his house cause he'd tell the wife that he stayed up all night with the baby as he had the baby in his arms playing Magic. But anyway, there was no LGS back then as there was a pawn shop where we bought our cards and there was no play space before the FNM (Friday Night Magic) program, no Pro Tour before it recently now became Mythic Championships. I firmly believe the Local Game Store is what built Wizards of the Coast into what they are today and that cannot die.
I'm sure it probably can and you know If they want to go completely digital then it's you know whatever but If the LGS goes under then it's our fault as players. Now here's my thing, I downloaded Magic Arena and even though I like it I won't spend a single penny mainly because it doesn't accomplish my goal as building EDH / Commander decks off of every existing Legendary Creature in Paper Magic is my main goal. That's the thing that occupies most of my disposable income for Magic: The Gathering. Magic Arena however doesn't fall in line with that and also simply because that's money not being spent at the LGS. Currently Magic Arena doesn't support the EDH / Commander format, I'm not sure If it ever will because have you ever just tried to watch a EDH / Commander game on MTGO? That's rough.
So let me tell you about myself, I started working at the age of 15 over 25 years ago working at a Local Grocery Store. I never left that business. I've worked my way up and learned certain things about retail at least food retail in my geographic area. People want service, people want value, we all do. We're shoppers and we shop at our LGS. There isn't any social value in Magic Arena (we're paying money for digital items so that isn't anything new since I've played Diablo II way back and there were people buying and selling suits of armor and I couldn't believe it), the one thing that I have learned is that back in 2008 there was a Local Game Store that went out of business and the wife and I were driving by and I said, "You know what that would be a good spot for a Local Game Store." She replied, "Yeah I think so and I think you're just the person to do it."
I was still young at the time when I had four kids at the house, and I said "You know what? We'll try an experiment." So I signed a two year lease and it was a very profitable business because I ran the Local Game Store like I would run one of my Local Grocery Stores. I didn't run it to make a profit, I ran it to break even so that the community would have a place while I still had my job at the Local Grocery Store to pay house bills. So there was some life changes and that building was in very very bad shape and the landlord was just a nice guy but he was unable to fix it so I said, "You know I don't HAVE to do this" so I backed it up and brought it to the house. So back to Magic Arena, GO TO YOUR LOCAL GAME STORE. We as the EDH / Commander Community are the cornerstone of a community.
A community of a Magic playing community. Now I know a lot of people don't think so because they've built Standard so much and they've pushed the format. While the format is now as good as it's been in a while in regards to the EDH / Commander Community we're the ones going in, we're the ones pilfering through the old boxes / binders, buying the old cards that nobody else believes that other formats don't want. We're the guys moving that old "stale" inventory for the Local Game Stores and I know a lot of shops don't think that EDH / Commander players make them money but they do. Heck we buy deck boxes, sleeves, new cards especially when a new set comes out nowadays with lots of Legendary Creatures and cards that support strategies based around their abilities including preexisting EDH / Commander decks.
I'm in the camp because I know where I'm spending my money, you all do too. Everybody knows how to vote with their wallet (or at least they should) and I'm almost exclusively a EDH / Commander player when it comes to Magic: The Gathering. I'll draft, I'll do sealed, I love Pre-Releases probably because it's my favorite format in the world because it's all new and shiny whatever. I love draft but let's face it I'm doing those things to get cards for EDH / Commander we all know it. I may accidentally draft a good whatever deck (trust me it didn't happen for Ultimate Masters) by the way Mono Red is terrible If you got no Burn. So that's what I'm doing that for is to accomplish my own goal of building a EDH / Commander deck off of every existing Legendary Creature in Magic: The Gathering.
IF THE LGS GOES UNDER IT'S OUR FAULT. That's why it's important for us as a Magic playing community to go to our Local Game Store, ask to look through the common box, bulk rares, whatever because that's where all the Magic is right there. If we spend most of our disposable income on Magic Arena IT WILL KILL THE LGS, because businesses that are not profitable do not stay in business. But I've heard the same argument time and time again, that Wizards of the Coast just wants to make money. Of course they want to make money they're a business after all, I want Wizards of the Coast to keep making money so that they can keep making Paper Magic so that I can accomplish my main goal. The same is true for the Local Game Store (LGS), they have to make money because I want them to be around because that is where my LGS the Collector's Connection in Dyersburg, Tennessee is at well I have two actually the other being Goose's Computers & Games in McKenzie, Tennessee.
If you listen to Adam Spain on Homeward Path that's his LGS as well. I don't go there as much as I want to because I work and it's holiday season so you know people buy their food. I know in Dyersburg he had an EDH / Commander League that I helped him out with and I think he had I don't know how many actual players he had. I kind of half-way helped him organize it a little bit, for some reason he thinks I know something about EDH / Commander but it was a good league. We picked a slow night with nothing much else going on and the players loved it, the store loved it. There was business, it drove revenue, they drove player interest, it was a success by all accounts to the point where Standard Showdown wasn't pulling in those kinds of numbers. There's some Local Game Stores where FNM's just aren't firing.
Thing is that your Standard FNM player could jump ship and go straight to Magic Arena. You don't have to buy sleeves, deck boxes, life counters, playmats, dice, nothing. I learned how to play Magic: The Gathering through a multiplayer environment and a one-on-one HUMAN INTERACTION. That's what it's all about for me. Every Friday night when I go over to my buddy Jimmy's house we sit around, play, and it's a bunch of friends around the table laughing while having fun playing cards. So like I said go out and support your Local Game Store (LGS), buy sleeves, deck boxes, life counters, playmats, dice, anything to keep them going to help pay for overhead.
