I'm new and at the moment I'm trying to focus on learning White. I've been experimenting with three or four black spells in my deck (with 4 Forsaken Sanctuary and one Isolated Chapel). All of the spells only require 1 black land to be cast.
Anyway, my plan is to do variations of mono-White, White-Black and soon White-Blue. I've just learned however that Guilds of Ravnica isn't really inclined towards those two combinations, which are only coming in January with Ravnica Allegiance.
So, if I wanted to increase my likelihood of getting good cards for the combinations mentioned above, which set would you recommend?
I know I can buy singles (or use wildcards in Arena), but there's a lot of fun involved in buying booster packs.
Thank you.
Edit: I'm not sure if this belongs in the General or Standard forum.
Oddly enough, for Dominaria, Wizards has a new product you might not be aware of:
Color theme booster packs!
(near the end of the article)
So you can buy white and black ones! https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/new-era-2018-05-03
So... the Pros seem to be that they are all one color plus lands and artifacts, they may have a theme (white rare that cares about auras plus some auras, for one example).
The cons seem to be irregular amount of uncommons...
Neutral might be they are only at some Wal-Marts (maybe online?) so if you'd rather support your local game store you can't with this product, but if Wal-Mart is your game store, more power to you.
if you're interested in vampires the ixalan sets might not be a bad idea and you might get glacial fortress if you want to go into uw at some point, dominaria has isolated chapel and is more of a multi color set than ixalan so more options there as well you might get lucky and hit teferi, hero of dominaria again if you end up going uw he will come in handy, core 19 i don't think is going to be of too much help but theres a handful of fun cards in the set and some some fun more mono color cards you might find handy. you have guilds of ravnica coming out and if your playing paper magic, you mention using wild cards so im not sure if you only use arena, everyone is going to have something they want and have stuff to trade as well so if you buy into that it might be useful as well, it wont nesecarily be useful as orzhov and azorious arent in the set but theres still a lot in the set. shocks are always going to be useful until something really big comes out in a modern legal set to replace/supplant them. As you mentioned though you are much better off buying singles and i would recommend that over buying packs and if i was going to buy packs i would go for a booster box of guilds of ravnica, the box should give 2-3 shocklands 3-4 mythics and should give most commons and a decent amount of uncommons if you're playing paper magic and looking to trade for the cards you need, everyone is going to need cards from guilds. arena will give wildcards in packs so shouldn't be too bad if you really wanna buy packs. i havent looked into it but i know the closed beta nothing was permament and they could reset everything at any time so i would be slightly cautious getting heavily invested at least looking only to buy packs but also if you buy gems and they reset you will get the gems back so its not entirely gone but you will need to reopen/wildcard what you get, in any regard best of luck
