As the title says it, the Canadian government is putting a 10% tariff on all playing cards. While most believe its targeted at mainly casinos cause most use packs made by Bicycle, a US company, card games like MTG and Pokemon are also affected by this tariff. What are your thoughts and opinions on this case?
Wow. That really sucks. Canadian players are collateral damage in this president's shortsighted dumbassery. Sorry, Canadian bros. We don't like him either.

Have your PM get rid of the other unfair tariffs on US goods, we will reciprocate and we can have free trade across the border. End all the tariffs, both sides.
I'm no fan of POTUS at all and did not vote for him, but am a fan of this current strategy. Sometimes you have to hurt a little before you can heal. If you don't like it, push your government to do the right thing and abolish all tariffs from the US.

That would be a pretty weal move considering the original tariffs were by the U.S. Folding to a very small pressure when the tariffs are hugely unpopular and we have an election coming up would not serve Canadian purposes.
If people are sick of reading about stuff just stop taking part. You have 100% control over what you read. Simic Ascendancy isn't going to get banned just because you didn't tell someone to shut up on the internet.

Then enjoy the 10% tariff on cards that your own government is imposing upon yourselves or petition WotC to start printing in Canada. We aren't imposing the tariff, you are. And our government is imposing tariffs on ourselves. I don't like it but fair is fair. You drop yours we drop ours. One sided tariffs used as protectionist tactics by governments than penalize hard working American producers trying to sell their goods abroad can't be left in place and if they are countries should expect the same treatment in kind. How about Canada starts with dropping its ridiculous dairy tariffs of between 250 and 295% on imported dairy products from the US? Maybe US should consider a reciprocal 275% import tariff on Canadian Maple Syrup?
My point, tariffs are stupid and designed to protect the few special interest over the many. And yes we are doing it to ourselves here as well. Free trade, zero tariffs and let the consumers in all countries reap the benefits, not the few special interests.

yeah folding to american pressure is always a good move that's never led to problems
when are y'all voting the republicans out? there's a non-presidential vote coming up, right?
Dissolving tariffs isn't folding to pressure, its good business unless you are the one (special interest) the tariff is meant to protect. So which special interest are you in cahoots with?
Remember the 10% tariff on cards HAS BEEN PLACED ON YOU BY YOUR OWN GOVERNMENT, not ours. So instead of protecting your wallet, your leaders have decided that you need to pay more for Magic cards. Sounds like you need to vote your protectionist politicians out of their offices.
Imbecilic presidents and politicians (of both parties) in the past have led us down the current path with allowing other nations to take advantage of us trade wise. So now we have a POTUS who is standing up to it and some people don't like being stood up to. I'll reiterate, I'm no fan of the current POTUS. He is a moron on most all things, except this. I am a fan of the position he is taking on trade for us. I don't like being taken advantage of and I don't like protectionist tariffs and special interest legislation.

Yes, 33 of the 100 Senate seats and all 435 of the House of Representatives seats are up for election this November. 24 of the 33 Senate seats up for election are currently held by Democrats, and 2 are currently held by Independents that caucus with the Democrats, though, so the Democrats have to fight harder to gain a majority in the Senate than the Republicans have to fight to keep the majority they have.

I don't like protectionist tariffs and special interest legislation.
If you don't like protectionist tariffs, then why are you a fan of protectionist tariffs?
I don't like them, but they are a necessary evil/tool in the fight against protectionist tariffs abroad if those countries do not want to lower or drop tariffs on our goods. An eye for an eye. Canada draws down their tariffs on our imports, we draw down our tariffs on our imports. It really is that simple. I'm ready for friendly competition between countries without roadblocks. We have plenty of steel, aluminum making potential here so if we place a REACTIONARY tariff on those goods to apply pressure to another country to lower or drop their tariffs on our goods then good for us sticking up for ourselves. For too long we have been apologists to other countries and let them get away with trade imbalances in the form of tariffs to dissuade their own countrymen from our goods and cowtow to special interests. If they want to keep a very low tariff on all goods, say 5% or less as a means of providing income for that countries infrastructure, I can see it.
And again, POTUS didn't levy a tax on Magic cards. Canadian PM/government did. Countries have taken advantage of us, it needs to be remedied.
I'm a New Zealander, why are you rage @ing me lol

How about Canada starts with dropping its ridiculous dairy tariffs of between 250 and 295% on imported dairy products from the US?
Hahaha, good luck with that. Trudeau has been struggling to keep Liberal support above 40% for much of the past year - actually pretty good given that Canadian politics has four/five major parties so achieving 40% popularity is fairly good. But the Trump-lite Conservatives are polling right behind him, and like Trump, are great at stoking insecurities and ignorance and turning that fear into engaged political support. Trudeau has seen some level of galvanized support because of his actions re American tariffs and any perceived weakness on his part will be purchase the Conservatives will absolutely use against him to close the gap in the federal election next year. Politically, I'm not sure Trudeau can afford to bend on longstanding dairy tariffs. Not when 75% of Canadians want him to keep things as is - and the American government has done nothing to change that.
That said, the Canada-US dairy tariff drama is hilariously complex. I've been reading up on it all month since this trade war crap started up, and it is dense. At the end of the day, dairy trade represents a miniscule amount of Canadian-American trade and dairy propaganda in Canada has been pointed for a very long time so the Canadian people by and large will not be okay dropping those tariffs (even if it would mean cheaper prices for Canadian consumers), plus America has a dairy surplus with us (around $400 million, we're the US' second-largest dairy trade partner because of exploited loopholes). After all my research, my opinion can basically be summed up as 'meh'. It's much ado over not much at all, a political ping pong ball being used now to sway and/or solidify political support when the issue itself isn't as huge as it's being blown up to be. It's really just not worth all this.
A playing card tariff is simply a targeted attack, I'm willing to bet that if we looked into where most standard playing cards are made, it'll be a deeply Republican stronghold to put the screws to Trump's base. It'll affect Canadian stores and consumers, but I have yet to see any significant Canadian backlash. The sentiment I've seen from friends and acquaintances has largely been ambivalent, or if anything resigned to Canada needing to take action but willing to do their parts if it means sticking it to Trump. I don't think this is going to result in any significant push from Canadian gamers for Trudeau to back down.
Ironically, I'm lactose intolerant and only buy MtG cards a few times a year so I'm not particularly invested in this battle in either direction.
Then enjoy the 10% tariff on cards that your own government is imposing upon yourselves or petition WotC to start printing in Canada. We aren't imposing the tariff, you are. I am not Canadian. But again, the US fired up the trade war, so saying Canada needs to drop theirs is foolish. NAFTA is a good start, but dairy isnt included. The US has Ag tariffs too, but the new war was started by 45. You said trade wars are bad, but said you like his tactics. Pick one.

I have already. I've said I don't like it but its a necessary evil. Like cutting away healthy tissue to cure a cancer, it hurts but a greater good can become of it eventually. Other tactics haven't worked. So while I may not like it, it is the best tactic out there.
Tit for tat. This recent round is IN RESPONSE to unfair tariffs already in place by Canada. Current POTUS is just standing up for us and taking on lopsided trade tariffs. So this is reactionary, not proactive. Drop your tariffs, we drop ours, simple as that. Levy more in response expect the same. The simple solution is agree to drop these stupid tariffs or lower them to the point of being near negligible and consumers of both countries are happy. Or continue to be hard headed and stubborn and "stand up" to the Moron in Chief to prove a point and pander to special interests. Which does nothing but punish both consumers of Canada and the US.
So they either break the chain or we do this dance. I'm fine with it. I don't like it but you have to stand up to the bully and that bully is other countries looking to exploit the US through unfair trade. And they aren't used to someone with a spine for a change after years of wimps. And I'm open to listen to other solutions as long as they include heavy reduction or removal of tariffs. STOP BEING STUBBORN CANADA!!! If not enjoy your lovely tariffs you place on yourselves. I'll do the same and once you want to start griping and moaning and whining about the orange idiot and see he has a point on this one we can get a real trade deal done that isn't one-sided.

Have you ever seen how many casinos we have down here? Bicycle (based in Kentucky from what I read) isn't going to blink. Ironically WotC, based in the heaviest blue of liberal-land in Seattle probably will feel it more than Bicycle and I doubt they feel much of a pinch if at all.
Again I'd love to hear a plan that leads to heavy reduction or removal of Canadian tariffs. Run it by me. If not its tit for tat. Again, just because the guy is an utter buffoon doesn't mean he is wrong on this one. He wants to deal, he is sticking up for us in apparently the only way that gets the bullies attention.
