Okay, so I am trying to find out where I can find descriptions and how-to's on all the different playing formats. And yes, I did try You-Tube but so far, I have only found really boring videos. I am afraid to go to my LGS because I don't want to feel like a looming mom. So any suggestions?
Every format? There's no exhaustive list, and to learn about decks for formats you have to look them up individually, of course.
Formats can be either Constructed (meaning you build your deck with your own cards ahead of time) or Limited (meaning you're provided with cards to build a deck at the time you play). Usually Constructed formats limit you to four cards with a given name with any number of basic lands, and 60-card minimum in a deck. Limited is ironically not subject to card count limits and has a 40-card minimum deck size.
Commander and Brawl are special cases, which mandate singleton (you can only use one card with any given name besides basic lands) decks of 100 and 60 cards respectively, and have a host of special rules.
Most Constructed formats differ in the card legality. In brief: Vintage is almost anything-goes, Legacy is like Vintage with bans to control power level, Modern is anything from 8th Edition and later, and Standard is anything from the past two-ish years.
Magic's Official Site has nearly all the formats. You can navigate from there to each format the banned and restricted lists and general rules. If you have any other questions go ahead and ask. While the site is normally a nightmare to navigate I've found this section surprisingly straight forward.
Going to your LGS is a good idea. They'll let you know what events they run, and you can look into those formats on your own once you know what they run. No point in building a modern deck, if your LGS doesn't run modern events.
