I have a problem in that the box I used to use for storing my bulk cards is beginning to fall apart and I need a new storage method.
I have been looking online but nothing is coming up apart from Super Monster Storage box which looks incredibly generic and requires self-assembly.
I have about 6000 cards and ideally would like just one box to put them in, none of these multiple small boxes on shelves as I do not have the space for that.
i took out the obvious good commons and uncommons and just threw the rest away. about once a year i need to buy a playset or two ... i treat that as "storage tax"
.
You don't want to assemble a super monster box? I have one and they're not overly difficult. I actually had to argue with the LGS I buy mine from NOT to assemble them for me. I buy supplies in bulk and it's too difficult to drive home with a bunch of assembled boxes in the van. What are you looking for since most paper boxes are rather generic anyways. Do you want a briefcase-like box to carry around or do you want something ornate that looks nice?
But I digress, I have one. It's OK I guess. Mine is nearly full (another 800 or so to go), all sleeved and not super tight. I calculate the box will max out at around 4000 penny sleeves/inner sleeves cards. If I decide for deep storage, then the box will hold about 4500 penny sleeved cards. When I got to around 2000-2500 cards, the box started to be difficult to handle and had a tendency to bend down the middle. I'm not a bachelor anymore so I don't have dedicated workspace for my cards anymore so everything has to be packed up and put away at the end of a "shift". In a nutshell, I think they're better for deep storage or for environments where handling is at a bare minimum.
I had three 4-row monster boxes that were full to the gills with both unsleeved and sleeved cards that didn't exhibit this tendency to bend and buckle no matter how full they got. I originally opted to move my collection to the "better" 5 row boxes but I find the box isn't strong enough to support its weight in cards and it doesn't fit well in my existing shelves. The move was prompted by the discovery of the family cat sleeping on the boxes.
I am experimenting with the long boxes (800 cards I think) because the boxes fit perfectly inside of a file box. Handling is a lot easier for me when I can bundle or break them apart. It is, admitedly, on the extreme spectrum of storage.
I'm looking for a sturdy box with a lid that can hold a lot of cards vertically in one place without any bending or breaking, but also doesn't look like something you might find in an office.
Currently they are all in a very old blue box that was originally used for handbag from a shop. It is of reasonable height so cards can be vertical and I added three row dividers myself way back. It's not obviously a box for storage which means I can shelve it with other games without it looking like an eyesore which the Monster boxes would (not being a student or single means it needs to keep with the decor).
If you want to class things up you snag yourself a card catalog from a library.
I absolutely love those catalogues and want one for myself. I love books and my personal book collection in high school damaged the framing in the area below my room. I had a 15' tall pitched ceiling and walls in my room and a double sliding custom book shelf to hold my entire book collection. Then I became interested in Magic....
But to use catalogues for Magic cards? To each their own I guess. I wouldn't bother...
I believe those catalogues use 3x5 cards so the drawers are suited to fit them. Magic cards are 2.5 x 3.5 so you're always going to have wasted space.
In addition, I'm reasonably certain most catalogues weren't made with conservation in mind so the materials used might ultimately be damaging to Magic cards. Especially any in no sleeves or single sleeves.
