I was awake waaaay too late for a work night last night and howled with glee when I saw this news. I jumped out of my chair and danced in my bedroom. This news is huge.
WoTC just did something amazing for the players and for the future health of Magic overall. The announcement yesterday that WoTC is bringing us the new "Battlebond" set, which is based around the Two-Headed Giant multiplayer variant brings with it big change in the way WoTC looks at addressing both reprint needs and new card printings for eternal formats going forward.
WoTC is showing us that they are going to directly address the reprint needs for Legacy, Vintage and Commander. To what degree remains to be seen but there is even more, bigger news... WoTC is giving these formats a shot in the arm in the form of NEW CARD PRINTINGS THAT SKIP OTHER FORMATS. I can't stress how much of a game changer this is. I have been addressing this topic around these forums for about a year and last night brought sweet victory for us all. At least in some measure...
WoTC has finally dropped the 56-card albatross from around their neck --- the 56 card per year pittance seen in Commander sets --- is no longer WoTC's carrot to dangle over our heads for new card printings in Legacy and Vintage. The 85 new cards per year coming in this "Battlebond" set are very different from the 56 cards we saw per year in Commander because "Battlebond" is not a set based around a specific format -- this is crucial.
Prior to this change, WoTC would dangle the prospect of new card printings that go directly into Legacy & Vintage in front of us through Commander. EDIT:and conspiracy (see bottom of this thread for explanation of why I didn't mention Conspiracy as much)
Now we get 85 cards (per year probably) that are not bound to any one format's design specifications and are in a niche of their own with much more freedom of design. These cards will bypass all of the conceptual filters of Modern & Standard. Amazing. These 85 cards won't be grounded in any one specific format either; this "Battlebond" product addresses multiple formats at once.
WoTC was making its Commander development team(s) cover too much canvas with the little amount of paint they had to work when they made announcements to remind us of the format legality of those 56 new cards per year. WoTC was dangling the prospect of new and impacting card printings for two formats, Legacy & Vintage, in a product, Commander, that has its own design goals. In my opinion the 56 new cards seen in Commander sets each year STILL ISN'T ENOUGH design space for Commander, let alone to be touting them in front of Legacy & Vintage players.
But that's a mentality that appears to have changed, somewhere within those walls at WoTC someone realized the tragic under-use of the concept seen in those 56 new Commander cards. The idea of printing new cards directly into eternal formats and having them SKIP OTHER FORMATS. Making this product have 85 new cards not legal in Modern & Standard helps open the valve for a greater flow of ideas into some eternal formats that have sorely missed such a thing. 85 cards per year is a good start to breathing additional life into a few eternal formats and I am so glad this happened. This forebodes well for Magic's ability to address the needs of its many formats without the hamfisted approach of doing so through Standard-legal printings or sets.
This opens up the future for products that specifically target our favorite formats with new card printings that can bypass other formats. Keep pressuring WoTC to adapt folks, they are listening to us. Good job everyone, we're helping WoTC be more dynamic in addressing our needs as players.
EDIT: This thread is a follow up to a thread I started in the Commander forum. When I made that thread I asked a moderator if I could go around to the forums for the other formats and make the same thread but altered a little for the sake of each format, for spreading the word around better, but was advised to keep it to one thread in one forum. So I stuck to the Commander forum and with the context of the 56 cards seen in Commander. I hope this adds a little background to the reasoning here. I am aware of the new cards printed into the Conspiracy sets, but was limited to targeting this subject through the context of Commander. This is an ongoing discussion.
But this has already happened with the Conspiracy sets, the first of which was released four years ago?
Hi @turnip_song, this thread is a follow up to a thread I started in the Commander forum. Very true! This is an expansion of that concept with the ability to address a wider range of needs than the just the host format's needs, for which the new cards get printed into. The 56 new Commander cards are designed for Commander's needs, which is why it's tragic that WoTC touted those cards for their Legacy & Vintage legality. These 85 cards in "Battlebond" will have greater freedom of design much like the new cards seen in Conspiracy. It's good news!
Doesn't Battlebound have the same problem Commander products did? The cards will be serving multiple masters and may not satisfy all of them.
So with Commander those 56 new cards were designed *for* Commander and as also legal in Legacy & Vintage as a side note.
With Battlebond, these 85 new cards are not released for the targeting of any one format but can be (and hopefully will be) an area of card design with great variability - in the sense that the 85 cards are not released in a format-specific product. While these 85 cards are being shared among three formats, the cards don't have the caveat of them being designed for any one format specifically. Some individual cards may have a more "Commander" feel for sure, especially the cards with multiplayer-centric mechanics, but as a whole the pool of 85 cards could potentially be what ever these 3 formats are needing.
Think of it this way: the power level of these 85 cards is going to be well beyond what could justifiably be printed directly into Modern and Standard within a single calendar year. Commander needs powerful cards, and justifiably so in a multiplayer environment, but now there is no compulsion to "put a lid" on the quantity of cards at this kind of power level and these cards may very well be spectacular by also being within the power level for Legacy and Vintage play.
Going the route of making products that have new card printings whose set-legality places them directly into some formats and bypassing others lets WoTC avoid the complications and avoid the conceptual filters that arise when placing cards with crossover demand into Standard-legal products. For the sake of all formats, this kind of move allows for Standard and Modern products to better focus on their specific range of design and alleviates the burden of stuffing crossover card printings into every set. Conceptually this is huge for the development of each format and allows them to stand on their own better.

I think you are making a lot of assumptions here. Pretty sure this is just going to be a fun set like Conspiracy and Unhinged. Some cards might find homes elsewhere but I don't think this is going to be the magic bullet you are looking for.
Doesn't Battlebound have the same problem Commander products did? The cards will be serving multiple masters and may not satisfy all of them.
I concur. I thought Battlebond was intended for 2HG? Did misread that somehow?
From the announcement: "For Limited, you can play Battlebond in either Sealed Deck or Booster Draft. Like Conspiracy, it's a mix of reprint cards and new cards. There are 254 unique cards in total, and 85 of those cards are brand new, all of which will immediately be legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage! The rest are all reprints, some of which even have spiffy new artwork. (And many of them I think you'll be quite excited for)."

I guess I'm pretty darn excited, maybe that's got me too hopeful for what this Battlebond set may hold. I can't deny that. However I do feel that I'm also putting a lot of emphasis on the importance of the concept of printing cards directly into formats by bypassing others. This is no small thing and this concept just expanded. This is the big deal I'm excited about.

I agree, bypassing Standard is the best way to make new Legacy/Vintage and Modern cards but I am not entirely sure stuffing those into a draft set is the best way to go about it (the same way I was never sold on doing the same thing with Commander sets). Still, I am hopeful a few of the cards will be playable in other formats. Even if they aren't, 2HG drafting sounds like fun.

I'm pretty sure every set is a draft set nowadays.
Edit - by "set", I mean booster products not precons.
They do need a new set for printing things specifically to support modern, but I'm not convinced they actually want to support modern that much. The original intent of modern was to play second fiddle to standard and be a place that gives long term value to rotated cards. The format has evolved into it's own entity since that original goal and WoTC doesn't seem to like the way this went down for a couple of obvious reasons. For one it no longer is serving the purpose of giving value to rotated cards because the subset of cards that make it in the format from standard are too limited. It's just sort of become the dumping ground of forgotten standard staples while modern centric players with cards from the birthing of the format cherry pick the few cards they find playable. The way the format has morphed has actually made standard less appealing to buy into and I've got no doubt it's another reason WoTC adopted commander/edh. Now pauper is picking up steam in paper and I got no doubts that WoTC will adopt it and start making products for that one, too.

It's too soon to know for sure, but the primary reason Conspiracy 2 is still floating around is due to the Conspiracies having zero value outside of draft. With this new set, it doesn't sound like they are doing anything like that so all the cards in the set should have value whether the pack has been opened for draft or just cracked for fun. That's the primary reason to be exciting for this set, as it's a supplementary set more in line with eternal masters than it is with their last foray.

Conspiracies can be fun in Cube. But the demand is low, so the cards have almost no trade value. I agree it will be nice to have a supplementary set not tainted as such.
I concur. I thought Battlebond was intended for 2HG? Did misread that somehow?
2HG is the intended format for limited play. I do not think that means the cards are not intended to have any other applications.
Commander.... Conspiracy.... I hope you realize that statement makes the rest of your argument look pretty bad?
Sorry, I genuinely have no idea what you are saying here. Can you please elaborate? Which statement makes my argument "look bad" and why?
My argument, for the record, is that all boosters are intended for multiple audiences. This has been more or less explicitly stated.
My deepest apologies. I had a brain fart while editing the post. That specific comment was intended for the OP but I terrible job with the edit.
The point I was making is that no one can pretend these 85 slots will prove to be valuable cards for any other format. Just as how a very very small number of C17 cards found a home elsewhere outside of EDH, we have to accept that the 85 new cards, realistically, will have a very very small number of cards of any interest or worth outside of their designed format.
In essence, I suspect the majority of new cards will be more like Conspiracy cards. Completely useless in any other format.
I tend to agree that we will likely get several cards that are useless in other formats. They may not be Conspiracies that are only good in draft, but in a product designed for team play, what do you think the cards are going to do? I'll bet the majority are designed around team play - you and your teammate, which means they will be costed appropriately and not be ideal for a single player format.
