Wanted -Zombie Foils and older expensive Zombie stuff. High Priority- Beta Z Master/ Int. Collector's Edition.
I'm just worried about what it means for Online Modern (and other non-Standard Formats) because there is no way they keep supporting MTGO, its a trainwreck and has been for years.
If Arena has no plan to support Modern, thats bad for anyone non-standard.
Spoiler alert: Arena is a money grab focused on the casual/mobile crowd. Their revenue is in draft and standard, and not the player experience. That's MTGO, that's MTG Arena.
Sold all my cards last month for other reasons, but this trainwreck of information from WOTC is too funny to not watch.
Really hard to justify to myself right now even continuing in the hobby, and its a shame because I liked the way Modern was heading after I took a break during the last ETron/GTron/GDS/JDS Meta period.
I do a lot of my playing on MTGO, the joy's of being 'free' at 9pm, and if I cannot do that, then...see ya Wizards.
Well something they could do to help is make it so that you only need 1 copy to play 4 copies in your deck.... if you are going to remove trading/purchasing why not cut down on the number of mythics. To make it so that if I get a duplicate I get a new random of the same rarity (or one higher if I have all rarity of that type) and that I only need 1 of each card in my collection to play a play set it would balance nicely with being forced to buy packs for everything.

If you only needed 1 copy of a card to run 4 in a deck, then the game would make obtaining cards excessively difficult.

They recently announced wildcards and the Vault. Wildcards can replace any card in a pack, and can be traded in for any specific card of the same rarity, and opening a 5th copy of a card earns you points towards opening the Vault (which at least for now means getting multiple wildcards).
Do we know how many points you need to open this vault? (and if different rarity s give different points) Frankly common wild cards seems pointless (now if you c ooulc use wild cards for ANY rarity now would be talking alittle better since the excess commons can be made in to mythics/rares you need. Also do we know if this is by set or by card. For example is Storm crow is reprinted in set b but I already have a playset from set a do they count as automatic extra or do I need to collect 4 more of the "new" storm crow?
All we know is that Wildcards have rarities and they can be exchanged for 1 copy of a card with the same rarity.
I imagine the vault working in one of two ways - either it does not require a lot of "dust" to open, thus allowing the rarity of the Wildcard unlocked from the vault to be randomized OR there are rarity tiers and you can work towards filling the meter to the tier you want (with Mythic being expensive and commons being cheap).

I could also see it working such that spending a common wildcard when there are no commons (or $insert rarity here) you don't have a playset of automatically gives you progress towards opening the Vault, so if you've got all the commons and you open the vault and get some common wildcards, you can immediately spend them for progress towards opening the vault again.
That would also potentially help someone store up rare/mythic wildcards in anticipation for a new set release. Get a playset of all the cards in the set, spend your common/uncommon wildcards to open the vault to get more wildcards, and continue the cycle until the next set comes out and you can immediately grab a playset of the rares/mythics you want.
EDIT: In addition, I really find MTGO unbearable since I started playing again. Its like the last 6-9 months its even worse, and my computer is way over spec.
Oh, it plays modern idSurge, it ALL PLAYS MODERN! (TBA 2025)
Seriously, this thing is going to be an epic failure unless there is some secret audience of players that aren't already deeply invested in MTGO that want to play digital magic. The trouble is that MTG is not a "joke parody" type of game or a disposable game like hearthstone or gwent is. It's a trading card game that people actively collect the cards to play. Simulating that digitally with costs involved while also being tied to a EULA that says no one owns the digital objects they buy isn't going to fly.

If the game solely focuses on Standard, then it is 100% akin to Hearthstone.
I think WotC would lavish much more love on MTGO if the game did not allow people to trade cards (thus opening up the door for the secondary market). WotC just loses so much money (from the Bean Counter's perspective) by not keeping everything in house.

The digital trade aspect is actually the strongest aspect of MTGO and it would have died ages ago without it. The main issue with the game is that it's old, tired interface isn't appealing to a newer generation and it fails to really take advantage of the digital platform as a whole. That's part of the reason WoTC is even trying to make a new digital game. Also WoTC needs to keep the contract loose on the digital cards, not tighten it up. Whether someone collects digitally or in paper they want to know they own the cards they got.

To be honest, I never bothered to even step into MTGO. It's a game that comes from the same generation as Final Fantasy XI and older, meaning the interface and a whole lot of the game is at the point of just needing a massive overhaul.

They need to not only learn from Hearthstone but learn from games that went utterly fail with auction houses like Diablo 3. The monetization is what they all want and there are striking examples of how not to do it.
And if they don't port people over from MTGO how do they expect them to divest and move to the new platform?

I doubt they are going to do promos for people to move from MTGO until they get support in for other formats than standard. Plus they need time to work on the redemption system. They likely have a database set up that is positively ancient. I think the fastest redemption route they could go would be a strait conversion to dust or something in Arena, though I think more people would prefer a direct transfer of their old collection.

it sounds too similar to HS so far for my liking.. No trading? if that's not a ********/just profit move what is it?
sure there is still wild cards/vault and "everything is purchable with in game currency" but that happens in hs too, the thing is how much it costs to purchase.
also just standard really sucks
the only good thing i can think of so far is that hearthstone will have another rival
and if it's only standard , they will be other formats later, else what will happen to rotated cards? just waste of time/money
but then again, games like that are focused on skinnerware/ pay to compete/play, just like mtg, so i cant expect much . hope im wrong,
maybe the wild card is a awesome mechanic, you will get lots of free stuff every week, the in game currency will be worthwhile and not a rip off,and you would pay to fasten your progress, and because the game will be awesome. : )
As a Beta player, you should be definitely worried about the cost of Arena. I probably shouldn't go into detail and they are "taking our feedback seriously and looking at how to deliver the best experience" (or similar corporate speech) but I wouldn't get your hopes up on Arena being cheap. The constructed rankings are just going to be people who have a couple of hundred pounds spare to throw at the game for a giant headstart on anyone trying to earn those boosters through dailys (especially since there is a cap on what you can earn each day).
The game has been great but I am seriously worried that the monetisation it is going to ruin it for me.
The problem is the lootbox issues. Companies think that they can keep doing this strategy indefinitely without customers eventually adapting and realizing how bad of a ploy it really is. Also what are they planning on doing with rotations? Just dusting all the collections from prior sets that rotate and force people to get new packs with the currency? This sounds like a natural disaster waiting to happen as it goes against everything a TCG is supposed to be about.

There's probably very little chance to have something like Legacy in Arena due to the complexity of the rules. To make an online game like Arena viable to support they have to try to keep mechanics modular. Basically, if they have a rule like "Exile target non-land permanent from the battlefield", they want to be able to template and apply that rule to multiple cards, not just custom build each single combination and permutation as it's own entity. Not to mention each rule has specific behavior tied to it like how exiling makes a permanent lose all its counters, damage, enchantments, etc, so something like Oubliette would need custom rules just to handle that card. Given how fast they are making new sets and the need to build, test, and release new builds ahead of paper by at least two weeks, that's a lot more work than one might think. They also went out of their way to add animations and other details to cards, so it's probably even more work than I'm painting right now to add legacy or modern into this.

Yeah, thats my thinking as well. Legacy has simply too huge a catalog, and too many weird cards to code out in any reasonable amount of time. I still have hope for Modern...but I dont know.
Mostly since I've found a deck I'm enjoying again I just dont want it all to go up in smoke.
They are building this beast from scratch so worrying about older sets right away is a waste of time.
They want all the consumers they can get $$$$, they'll get there. Right now to get a functioning game online and competing it only makes sense they stick to Standard and figuring out what type of 'system' they're going to use to monetize. That's where they'll make or break themselves.
Think about it, they have to program in ALL the mechanics to the AI and for the game to manage. It's simplest to stick with the fewest, which is standard.
I'm still waiting for my invite, but I know my top priority will be pushing to make sure it's not stupid expensive and hopefully multiple ways to play.
