This was something that came up in the baseless speculation on Return to Dominaria, but anyone else hoping that wizards takes another crack at the snow mechanic? I'm actually pretty interested in seeing what the current day wizards does with snow, and it feels like given the whole direction they are now running that they may revisit the polar north in the next couple of years.

Snow ranks a 7 on MaRo's Storm Scale, and, according to him, has no big fans in development. That means Snow has to be a perfect fit for its set, a descriptor not consistent with what we know of the set so far. See, the Snow mechanic isn't indicative of Dominaria, but rather the Ice Age time period within the plane. The art of the plane we have seen so far is obviously not set during the Ice Age, so Snow's odds of reappearing in that set are nil.
Madness, the Storm Scale's 7-8 poster child, only saw print because it exemplified the theme, mood, and overall story that Wizards wanted to achieve in Shandows Over Innistrad block, so the mechanic will have to be at least that relevant to an upcoming plane in order to reappear. Snow's next set can't just be set in a plane with cold regions; the cold has to be central to the set thematically as well.
On the entire front of popularity, the main thing people probably aren't a fan of is cumulative upkeep, which snow got paired with when it originally showed up. As an actual mechanic it's probably far better than wastes. Also, how long ago did he even make that statement? They literally U Turned on core sets, swapped into making stronger answers, etc. And really, Snow is far more popular than that guy thinks.

You have a point, it has been a few years since MaRo last commented on the mechanic, so maybe its storm scale number could have changed. Would certainly be nice if somebody could pull up a recent comment on that. Of course, the popularity of the mechanic relative to wastes doesn't make it more or less likely to show up anytime soon. Snow basics are a big part of the mechanic, and they pretty much force any set that has it to go whole-hog on snow. A likely candidate for its return would have indicators in concept art or even the set's name.

MaRo does a lot of marketing talk when he does his posts and I've worked with a couple of those folks since I used to be into advertising and design. Pretty much everything they say is time sensitive. If they are doing a return set and it takes off, I wouldn't be surprised to see snow show up soon after. However, given the power of the older cards involving snow, I got a feeling they may save a lot of it for the new "core" sets.

Regardless of its actual popularity (and you'll need to actually present some data that it's popular if you want to credibly contradict people from Wizards saying it's unpopular), it does need to fit in the set. The ice age on Dominaria is over, so it doesn't make sense to bring back snow when we return.
I'd like to see it again. But I don't think it will comeback, and as stated the Ice Age is over. But, you never know.

I doubt we will see snow in Dominaria. My thoughts are that if they really want to get nostalgic they'd probably reprint some cold snap staples in masters 25 and do snow in an upcoming set in the following year. I've bought up some old cold snap starters and some snow lands to satisfy my hunger for now, though. Honestly, I still like the coldsnap snow lands more than the full arts from the new un-set.

I'm sure they could do something cool with it. They could have it as a subtheme in a set like the aforementioned Wastes or Deserts. I could see Snow mana being used on kicker effects as a way to boost spells, or in cycling costs. The big issue is how to make it necessary and interesting in deckbuilding. Wastes had the tension of diluting your mana base, which made drafting interesting.
I was also thinking about how the developers said they don't like snow. I believe the reason for that is that snow lands are basic lands with no actual downside. They just interact with snow permanents and abilities. This works against their current trend towards parasitic, self contained mechanics as there are cards that may check for card name, etc, that were intended to be symmetrical in regards to basic lands. Honestly, I prefer old wizards over new.

Sure, I'd personally be in favor of a future set with Snow cards again, this thread was simply in the context of returning to Dominaria.
A while back, MaRo had a poll to see what new planes people wanted to visit. The list included some pretty obvious ones like Kaladesh (known due to cards like Artificer's Epiphany in Magic Origins) and Vryn (while we haven't gone there yet, MaRo puts Vryn at the same level as Dominaria on the Rabiah Scale). It also included "Egypt" (see: Amonkhet) and "Pirate", "Dinosaur", and "Mesoamerica" (see: Ixalan). Relevant to this discussion, the list included "Norse", "Viking", and "Winter" planes.
I'd be in favor of a Norse plane, since that would likely also mean more Dwarves for my Depala EDH deck.
Actually, it's kind of funny looking at it but snow never seemed to completely leave. SoI block brought ice counters with Thing in the Ice, From the Vault Legends brought Merit Lage back from the annals of history, and through sheer happenstance we got a snow creature reprint recently with Blizzard Specter.

If I recall, MaRo a year-or-two ago was experimenting with ABU dual lands that were legendary and snow on his blogatog. Trying to circumvent the RL with cards that were just unique enough to be printed.
While I think it will be back eventually I'm sure it will probably be in some supplemental set like Conspiracy or Modern Masters, unless a more winter/snow themed plane comes up. Sooner or later the snow lands have to be reprinted, basic lands at least, else they'll end up being $5 a pop.
Honestly, trying to build with snow is rather interesting, to say the least. In modern the only real competitive deck to take off was mono-red Skred, but that's largely because the support isn't quite there for other colors. It also doesn't help that at the time Ice Age was developed, the game was far more story driven, so the reason it was an "underpowered" set wasn't due to game balance as much as it related to the brother's war. They just got done nuking the world into oblivion and the mana on the plane was all kinds of wonky.
The two good things about snow that I like as a player:
1) It's not really a parasitic mechanic as much as a symbiotic one. Snow works with non-snow better than even energy works with non-energy. In fact, cards like Extraplanar Lens work amazingly well with snow.
2) It encourages more focused deck building much like Devotion does. In fact, if they combine snow with devotion in the same set mono-colored decks would probably be pretty insanely strong, being able to barrel roll into some relatively strong plays.
3) It's easy to hate against. An instant speed Cold Snap or similar card would be pretty devastating against the decks running snow as a mechanic.
4) Theme. Snow fits blue and black very well, and people who want to play a cryomancer deck competitively would probably love the stuff.
On the downside, if they do another swing at snow they absolutely have to do a masters set with Skred, Coldsteel Heart, and Scrying sheets if they don't reprint those cards in the new set. I've already got my slivers order potentially lined up because dominaria is going to likely push that creature type into the modern era much like what happened with Eldrazi. If slivers get any good ETB utility creatures or value based creatures instead of just lords, they are potentially going to be the strongest tribal deck outside of merfolk.

I think the main problem that Snow has is that very few people (save those playing Skred Red in Modern) play it for its mechanics. There are those that pair it with Extraplanar Lens in Commander of course, but beyond that you tend to see very few players playing Snow beyond simply pseudo-pimping their decks.

It's largely because of the lack of power behind the mechanic. Even when it was in standard it wasn't really played heavily from what I remember. Personally, I think a return to snow could be good for the game, it's just the developers have been too focused on making every mechanic some toss away parasitic mechanic. They could literally just make creatures and spells that are cheaper or run better with snow. Or their abilities do extra frostbite damage when used with snow land mana.

Did you make this thread to discuss the prospects of how and when snow could return, or are you just interested in waxing nostalgic about old mechanics while beating up on recent stuff? You can feel free to like or dislike whatever you want, but parasitism is hardly exclusive to new mechanics. Even snow itself got some of the same crap you're complaining about back in Ice Age.
Snow being redesigned under modern policies is to be expected, though they could do anything they wanted with it due to it being just a supertype.

I'm not sure you understand what "parasitic mechanic" means, beyond being a bad thing.
A parasitic mechanic is one that doesn't interact with the greater pool of Magic cards; it's restricted to pretty much just the pool of cards in the set or block that it came with. Splice onto Arcane is parasitic, for example. Energy is parasitic (although since most energy-using cards also generate some energy, it's not nearly as bad).
Saying "make creatures and spells that are cheaper or run better with snow" is a proposal for a parasitic mechanic.
