I apologize if this topic has been beaten like a dead horse, but this is my first time encountering this issue. To start off, my only focus in MTG is Modern and EDH. I have been playing for about 6 months now and my collection has hit over 4k cards total, and I want to thin out the jank. Since starting Modern, my card collecting attitude has changed 180 Deg; 90% of the cards I own have been pulls, other 10% purchased and now I am in the mindset of buy what I need.
As of now, I have 4 EDH decks that I care about "Omnath, locus of rage, an early Karlov build, Meren, Clan of Nel Toth, and my Ur dragon "on hold for its need a better land base". My Modern deck is my Golgari CoCo Elves.
For starters, any C/U cards that I have more then a playset of, into the bulk sell box it goes, same goes for all vanilla cards. What is a good way to determine what cards are jank an not? About two months ago, I have discovered Metamox, and they give cards a rating of Chase, Money, and Jank. What I don't know is how accurate their ratings are. Any advice/tips is greatly appreciated.
EDIT: My end goal is to create a toolbox that will work within both formats, tailored for modern and EDH staples.
So, the funny thing is that what is jank in one format can be really good in another. For example - Tarmogoyf is expensive because it's a high power Modern card, but it's near unplayable vanilla garbage in Commander. Likewise, there are lots of cards that will be staples in a certain Commander deck, jank in other Commander decks, and unplayable in Modern. True, there are some cards that may be considered Commander goodstuff or staples that will overlap with Modern, but you're going to need people who play both to give those recommendations. A recent poll showed that a lot of Commander players don't play other formats (I'm one of those), while we can't make Modern suggestions,we can certainly make suggestions for a Commander collection.
I would actually suggest a slight tweak to how you are storing your cards - keep playsets of Modern cards in one place/box, and then keep singles intended for Commander in another. You may need five copies of a given card, if you run it in both formats.
