So Diamond Valley and Gaea's Cradle got the closest thing we'll see to a "reprint" today. We know WoTC doesn't want to do a RL reprint as a mere "functional reprint" but it seems that being a DFC (double-faced-card) is sufficiently "different".
I believe the long awaited answer burning in most of us has finally been answered. Will WoTC "reprint" cards on the RL? In a way, with today's revelation - Yes!
While this maybe helps for EDH, it sure doesn't address high prices for Legacy staples. The front side of these flip cards isn't nearly pushed enough to make these competitive with the originals.
The problem with the reserved list has more to it than just reprinting cards. I don't want the RL gone just so they can reprint Gaea's Cradle, I want it gone because the entire thing is going to blow up and cause problems in the future for pretty much everyone playing magic. The only reason I can think of that they aren't getting rid of it is because they are making a lot of their revenue from MTGO and the paper card game has become the secondary product from a financial standpoint. Even if the paper version of Magic the Gathering went through a crisis, they can coast on profits from MTGO and possibly MTG Arena if that pans out.
I mean, if the game in paper is destined to simply become like an antique collection because that is how wizards wants things to go, than there isn't a whole lot we as players can do about it.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
They could have printed Itlimoc, Cradle of the Sun as a land without the DFC thing because the first line of text makes it not a functional reprint of Gaea's Cradle.

I wish they did that even though I know they never would due to standard balance and because of the issue of how close it is to the original Gaea's Cradle. Because it is so close to the original functionally, it would have investors who bought the original attempting legal action.

Investors with enough money to be hurt by reprints will never attempt legal action because they would have to disclose how much cash in appreciating, non-registered assets they've been hiding from the IRS for decades. It's amost laundering.

The issue I'm referring to is the old from the vaults loophole that used to exist. Because there were complaints the loop hole got closed, and the same thing would likely happen if they did what you suggested and just make a slightly better version.

Complaints from whom? What avenue was used to lodge these complaints? Letters to the editor at The Duelist? LGS's at the time?

They wouldn't have a leg to stand on because it wouldn't break the letter or spirit of the RL. We do have some outright improved cards from the RL, ie Koskun Falls vs Propaganda and Ghostly Prison.
The text within RL cards is not prohibited, just the reprint of the exact same text with the exact same playability. And Gaea's Cradle is not the same card if it can tap for G with zero creatures on the board.
Any heavy investor into art or collectibles, will have created a charitable remainder trust, to shield them selves from capital gains when they sell these assets. Otherwise they can sit on these appreciating assets forever leaving them locked in vaults and safety deposit boxes.

That is a bit harsh, I would say it's closer duals vs shocks. Not as good, but close enough for probably most people
Its actually a rather generous comparison. Both primary cards are lands, both compared cards are 3CMC, one then requires additional set up while the other immediately fulfills the same function. The only disingenuous part is that there are a lot of cards with Undergrounds Sea's effect, while there are almost no cards comparable to Gaea's Cradle.

I would say Dark Petition is a more apt choice, but yeah they are really not as close as they need to be.
Okay. I'm with you.

Wait, what?
Gaea's Cradle is to Itlimoc, Cradle of the Sun as Underground Sea is to Drake-Skull Cameo
