I assume that somewhere there is a thread like this. I have been reading way back into the General forum, and I constantly come upon threads saying "Cards were stolen, help!". If there is already a thread on this, feel free to lock it.
I feel really bad for people who get their cards stolen, it is crappy that we cannot trust our fellow humans. It is sad that their are people out there who resort to theft because they are too lazy to work for anything themselves, but they do exist, and we must remember this.
So it makes me wonder, what can people do to avoid getting cards stolen?
1. Do not leave cards in your car if you can help it. Travelling? Have to stop to eat? Eat somewhere with windows, sit by windows to watch your car, or eat in your car. Getting home to your apartment? Do not leave your cards in the car overnight.
2. Gotta use the bathroom? Go quickly, try and hide your cards within your car. (if you follow step 3 you can bring your cards with you into the bathroom)
3. Do not bring all of your cards with you where you go, only bring what you need, and in a way that is easy for you to carry and go wherever you need to go.
4. Have to go to the bathroom at the LGS? Bring all of your cards with you.
5. Trust no one
6. Do not brag about what you have
It all boils down to this: Stop having too much faith in humanity, and don't think "It can't happen to me".
Anyone else have any pro-tips for not getting their cards jacked?
Edit: If you have had cards stolen, this thread is not intended to poke fun or make you feel bad. I mean no offense.
Good idea: play with your friends and bring less valuable decks so *********s won't take them
Bad idea: steal everyone else's possessions in a glorious fit of kleptomania.
Trade with one person at a time. While you're negotiating with someone, no one else looks through your stuff.
That is a good idea, I see people at my LGS talking with one person, while there are 2 other people looking thru their cards, and they are not watching them. I am sure most people are trustworthy at my LGS, but I still would not let me guard down.

I definitely think you should play anywhere you want with as powerful or expensive a deck as you want, but you also better pay close attention and not leave anything sitting around.
This is an age old topic. I created a post a short time ago about it where filched my card, I called him on it, and he tried to give me "back" a different card.
Before I go into it. Don't leave your cards in the car. Heat is not friendly to cards. If you're not comfortable, maybe a little cool even, then your cards are not comfortable either.
That said. My rule has always been #3, if I can't fit it into my bag, it doesn't come along. But your bag doesn't do jack if it's hanging on your chair back while you're playing. If space is a premium, I keep mine on the floor, between my feet, while playing. My favorite for years was a canvas Sailors Ditty Bag. That bag went with me everywhere. I lost my last one so I plan to make a new one this year.

That is exactly what I do, between the seat with the strap around my foot (small canvas messenger bag). If I go to the bathroom I take my cards.
I too have noticed heat will curl cards pretty bad....
Just carry stuff around you are comfortable like it would be your cash money.
If you trade, use multiple binders. Some that contain stuff, that even if stolen, will not hurt you by much.
Expensive cards you better do not carry around all the time and you might only trade in specific situations and/or friends , or at least a bunch of people around you know. If your "friends" steal from you, everything is somewhat lost, as that creates a deadly fun-killing atmosphere that is as harmful as it gets.
In big events like a grand prix i would never bring my big binders, simply because carrying them around would be annoying, and losing them would be tremendous financial loss that is easily avoided by simply not bringing them at all.
You can use a list of cards you own and simply print them out, even with pictures, and if someone wants to trade these cards, you do so online and/or meet in private at some other time (dont rush it, if the cards are valuable, theres no need to trade them right on the spot).
Its also good if a store has some form of security, at least some cameras and people should know it.
Building a healthy community certainly helps to keep problematic people away mostly.
If people act shady do not trade with them and tell your friends right away.
----
In the end of the day, everyone and i say everyone that plays long enough will have some cards stolen, as everyone will have some moments of not watching out, or some especially lousy specimen will steal regardless or downright rob you.
Only option then, having some security around and connections to enough people and stores around the area to tell everyone what cards you are missing and they should contact you right away if someone has exactly these cards in trade binders or tries to sell them, especially cheap. And of course just check ebay , some idiots sell the stolen cards right away. At that point, its a job for the police, especially if its a bunch of real cash involved.
sit by windows to watch your car, or eat in your car.
I love how it is just assumed that of course, you are travelling by car. Oh, the US.
It's usually assumed by those in the U.S. that those outside the U.S. are smart enough to filter and assimilate information in a manner appropriate for their given situation. Overall, it saves us all a bunch of time having to type exceptions for every country involved.
It's Ok to be politically correct but once in a while, you just gotta accept it's Avenue Q and go with the flow.
I have actually had my bag stolen from me. It had all my decks and trade stuff. This caused me to quit for 10 years.
I do not let my bag out of my sight now. Not even at work (I have to bring stuff to work because not enough time to go home after work and then back out). It comes with me to the bathroom, to work meetings, to lunch.
I also always notify a judge if I see an unattended bag at a big event (this happens almost all the time). Not just for safety reasons but because I really don't want someone else to have that happen to them.

Whoops, I didn't mean to be political, either correctly or incorrectly. I was just commenting on the apparent one to one relationship between "movement between A and B" and "driving". It's just interesting to observe from the outside, that's all.
Like when you are in the US, and you ask at the hotel, "how do I get to X", and the reply invariably starts with "well, you drive such and such street etc."
I get it. I tried to be as... succinct in my post without sounding like a jerk.
There's a lot of cultural differences around the world. Some are pretty obvious like U.S. vs. N. Korea. Others... not so much. Most of the time, it's just the difference between soccer and football. I wish everyone lived on Avenue Q, I think our lives would be a lot more relaxed. I say Merry Christmas, my neighbor says Happy Hannakah and the guy from New York says **** off. It's all good.

Yes I live in the US and most of us travel by car.
