My friends and I used to play Magic a lot. With new expansions, things got more complicated and the game became unfun for us. I think it would be fun for us to limit our cards to those old school ones that weren't so complicated. We don't want the limitations of certain blocks or whatever, but more the abilities on the cards. We don't want to deal with the cards that flip over like Samurai cards, or Grafting or whatever else has come out with expert expansions. We want to keep it more simple, Flying, First STrike, Vigilance...the classics.
I've seen Advanced and Expert cards. Are these limited that way so only certain abilities are allowed in those difficulties? If so, is there a list somewhere that has the differences specified?
Magic has this weird relationship with the concept of Beginner, Advance and Expert. Outside of Portal 1, 2 & 3 it's just a mess. Honestly, I don't think WotC really understands so there's no point in figuring out yourself.
You're really better off at looking at the old sets to see what mechanic were there and disallow cards that add to that in later sets, such as DFC. You and your group should put your heads together and take a vote on any new mechanics and go from there.
You're not the only one, Magic '96 does something similar and a lot of kitchen players reimplement mana burn.
I'd suggest finding cards from core sets. You'll remember Xth Edition (4th Edition, 8th Edition, etc). After 2010 they became M1X (M10, M14) based on the year they were released. They'll have the types of cards you're looking for without having a bunch of random new keywords that only existed for a block. Core sets stopped after M15 (although they are returning next year), so you'll have to do some looking around, but cards and booster packs should still be reasonably easy to find for M13-M15.

Magic Origins is also a core set, even though it doesn't follow the naming convention of either 4ED through 10E or M10 through M15.

Or do we just need to figure this out ourselves?
