AzureDuality, l've been playing since '94. I've played in places all over Nor. Cal, Seattle, Portland and the Oregon Coast. They vast majority of people I've met and played with have been awesome. I've also encountered every negative sterotype out there as well. Maybe the area where you live has an overabundance of the latter. I've also noticed that the people who claim "it's everybody else, not me", it really is just them. No offence but maybe you're hyper sensitive a d hyper judgemental at the same time. Sorry if people don't conform to your unrealistic expectations. Sometimes you have give folks the benefit of the doubt. I'm an obnoxious extravert, but I'm hella fun to hamg with and have many great peeps to play Magic with. If you were to judge me by my loud exterior you'd miss the opportunity of get to know me. Many people fit that category. So maybe you're arrogant and insecure, that's how your posts come across to me. People, you cam't live with them and you can't kill them, so might as well learn some social skills and get along. There are people who I don't enjoy playing with, and I have no problem letting them know it, but I'm also civil about it. I mean really, how cool do you think you are?
I will say location plays a very large factor on the type of players you find. Granted I've found cool people everywhere but I definitely notice trends in I guess... social levels? Depending on where you are
Not sure this is trolling or not by the responses but my take on it...
I'd tend to agree the overall player base can be pretty rough. Unfortunately, nerdy things tend to bring out the socially inept or flat out mental health. Not all hit this spectrum of course and many people I've played with are cool, hell cooler then me, but I seem to see it all the time regardless. This multiples if prizes are involved. People who were originally cool go insane if I start winning.
I'd say play edh or multiplayer. Takes the pressure off and often times the stupider the game gets, the more fun people have. Got to find the right people of course. Months of weeding people out until I found my group.
I do love EDH, but unfortunately that seems to pull in the "try hard" crowd who thinks that beating down others in a game with no prizes is fun. Seems like even with nothing on the line it still brings out the worst in people, especially when the game drags on or you make any sort of move on a player.
I still disagree that Magic is about playing with others. I think if they knew what people were like they wouldn't say that.
Also you're trying make up excuses to cover up how bad the player base is for Magic. Ending up on the wrong side of variance is a weak response to was seems to be an obvious reality.
I really think you are trolling.
If this isn't, that is not an issue with playing magic.
What makes you the one that knows best? That is the kind of attitude a 13-old boy has, and I really hope you have not yet come to age.
What obvious reality you are referring to? probably not the one I live.
Are you really sure you're not making a huge generalization? Do you really know "the player base"? You don't know me, so your argument is surely invalid.

You are kind of proving my point about they player base. I ask for civility and little else and people can't seem to manage that much. Hearing people like you say otherwise makes me think about "if you want to hide a tree then use a forest". Your definition of awesome could be intolerable to others.
And I have given people the benefit of the doubt before, but it does not change much in the end.

@AzureDuality: If your local scene really sucks that bad I feel sorry for you. I guess I'm lucky, my lgs is awesome. The people there are warm, welcoming, and open. We don't have any arrogant tryhards, or obnoxious high schoolers. I'm in a tourist town and we get visitors about ever other week and they have a blast. We have one 12 y.o. whose a little spazy, and this one guy(who's not there very often) who acts like FNM is tho pro tour. But evn they aren't that bad.
I know there are undesirable types in the community, I'm not blind to that fact. Plus, game stores are a reductive environment, so if you get a bad scene it'll be over much. The point some of us are trying to put forth is that there really are great people to play with. For some of us, we live in locals that have more mature groups than in other places.
I'm not really the jerk I sound like and just trying to get across that the ENTIRE scene of MTG isn't as bleak as you say it is. Sometimes you have to try harder to find them. The more you are open to others, the easier it is to meet cool people.

Sorry to hear that. I've found a few yisan and stax karador players I can do without in my life... however weeding them out too over time has resulted in a few awesome different play groups that play to have fun, or play to see how insane magic can go if let loose.
I've tried some other formats but edh seems the only one to pull that off. Never been a fan on 1on1 though. A good edh table with beers and good music in the background nets some fun nights

Who says you can't kill people? You can definitely kill people. You might have to find a new LGS, but it sounds like the OP has to do that anyway. That or solitaire.
Having played the game pretty often and having a group of regulars, as well as playing at my local store, I'll just generally chime in that it's not very hard to find nice people to play with. People can be difficult to interact with, but they aren't all bad.
AzureDuality, if hanging out with cool people, laughing, trash talking, and enjoying playing Magic is intolerable to you, then I wouldn't know what to say. The point of playing Magic is having fun, right? If not, I've been doing it wrong for over 22 years.
Some thoughts on the subject.
1) Magic is a game that is very dependent on location, and in different towns the players will be different. I've noticed that many players in my area are different from those you described, e.g. I don't know anyone who flicks their cards. Also a lot of people in this thread have made similar claims.
2) Asking this question on the forum is a bit self defeating. You are asking the magic playerbase if they have problems with the playerbase, (since most people here are longterm magic players). Because of this you are going to get a lot of defensive answers, because people think of themselves as the hero of their own stories, no matter what the real scenario is (Note like I said above I think that the real scenario is positive at least where I live). So I don't know if you are really going to get much out of this question.
3) Some people like to be competitive and some don't trying to match yourself with the right group is hard. For example I really want to win in a tournement while playing very silly decks otherwise.

Fun is a rather subjective term really, same with cool. I don't appreciate trash talking and I have my own way of enjoying the game. I really am just asking for civility without feeling like I'm at a sports bar.
I am frankly a pretty lax person when it comes to games as it takes quite a bit to get under my skin and I don't ask for much. But magic players as a group have been the ones who really test my patience. I have had more civility over monopoly than Magic. Especially when it comes to my favorite format EDH. I have never seen people get so worked up over a game with nothing on the line. I'm not a big fan of the other formats really, but I love the feel and concept of EDH. Just sucks that it is the place that attracts a bad crowd.
I want to like this game, but the people make it hard. They really kill the fun out of the game.
This really feels a lot like you're being willfully short-sighted and self-centered about the conflict you're struggling with. I think I've been in a similar place about the game, but my eventual conclusion was that I just need to resign myself and make peace with the fact that what I want from the game does not align with what most people playing the game want. That sucks, but pretending it's an intrinsic flaw of the player base and not a simple difference in priorities is a little presumptuous.
If you are in the western suburbs of the Chicagoland area Shamburg has a decent crowd as well as Palatine. I unfortunately live in Elgin so the closest place I've got is kind of so-so for games.

If you don't like people at your LGS then go play MTGO. If that's too much money for you, go play xmage or cockatrice. But best of all just play with friends. No magic is better than playing it with close friends.

Haven't really had a problem with netdecking, but in EDH you do find the same generals being run a lot. Plus a few "obvious" choices.
