I'm not a fan of the fact that the ultra pro oversized sleeves open along one of their long edges. I recently found out that Ultimate Guard makes oversized sleeves that fit planechase and oversized commander cards. Has anyone tried them? Do they also open along the long edge like the ultra pro sleeves, or do they open along a short edge? Here's a link to the product:
Does anyone else have other suggestions for oversized sleeves? I typically use dragon shields for all my decks, but Arcane Tinmen doesn't appear to have a sleeve that fits planechase cards. I've also seen people suggest using postcard sleeves, but the dimensions seem a bit big for planechase cards. I know that ultra pro also makes another oversized option with the magic logo on the back that actually opens along a short edge, but I'm not a fan of artwork on my sleeves.
Well, since nobody replied I bit the bullet and bought 3 packs of 40 oversized Ultimate Guard sleeves. Had to import them from the UK since I couldn't find a dealer anywhere here in the states that sold them.
To answer my own question in case anybody else stumbles across this thread and is also curious - these are top-loading (short-edge) sleeves, not side-loading (long-edge) like the ultra pro oversized sleeves.
Thanks for the response. I was hoping someone else might have a suggestion as well since I have been looking into the same thing. I have been sleeving my cards in the black Ultra Pro sleeves and, while they work fine, I don't like that they load on the side (opening on the long side) because it makes shuffling awkward. If I would have known the Ultimate Guard ones load on the top (short side) I would have picked those up.
How do they seem for size? I have my MTG Vanguard cards sleeved up and they are a tight fit in the Ultra Pros since they are just slightly larger than the "normal" planechase/archenemy cards. Do they planechase cards seem like a tight fit or is there a little extra room in the sleeves?
I asked my LGS to get me some of these and they haven't gotten them in yet, or I would've responded.
Thanks for the heads up - I'm looking forward to picking them up.
The sleeves fit snugly, they are 91x129mm and planechase & oversized commander cards are 89x127mm, so there's 2mm of play inside the sleeves on each axis.
One thing I can say with regard to their size is that I bought 3 packs of 40 sleeves to sleeve up all 86 plane cards from the planechase anthology and 2 of the packs had sleeves that were the exact same size, but the 3rd pack had very slightly smaller sleeves than the other 2. It's not that noticeable when the cards are all shuffled up, but when I initially sleeved them up I could see a slight difference in size of the sleeves when they were all grouped together. So, getting all the sleeves out of the same run you'll be fine I'd guess, but there might be some size variance if you get sleeves out of different runs.
