Back when I started playing in scars of mirrodin, a friend I had met at my lgs only played so he could fill out sets.
He was working on M11 at the time and only needed a primeval titan to finish it.
I just happened to pull one and he asked to trade, I asked for 50 storm crows.
The next weekend, he had bought me 200 foil storm crows. 7th edition, 8th, 9th, portal, all of them.
I stop playing around dark ascension, giving away many storm crows while on hiatus. thinking that they are silly with a cute story.
I'm down to about 30 foil storm crows now.
I get back into magic a few weeks ago and find out that foil storm crows are worth $15 each.
Then i look on mtgstocks and find out that 7th edition foils broke $500 each, while the others hovered around $150 for a while.
Can anyone tell me why the jump in price happened?
Keep in mind that the super-high prices were the prices that sellers put them up for. The fact that the price dropped to the $15-20 range for 7th edition and $5-7 range for 8th and 9th edition foil versions attests to how few people actually bought them for that price. Another factor, particular to the 7th edition printing, is that older foils were much rarer and much more sought after than more recent foils. To put it in perspective, a foil 7th edition Birds of Paradise is worth $275, the third most valuable printing after Alpha and Beta.
The rest, I suppose, can be attributed to the popularity of the meme.
