I'm still relatively new to magic: can someone explain this to me?

I think you need to elaborate a bit. What is it that you are not understanding in regards to tribal? Card choices? Deck design?
Tribal decks are my absolute favorite, so I'm willing to assist, just need to know what direction you are looking to go.
What i mean is like what are the advantages of using a tribal deck? I have plans to build a zombie deck, i just don't know what the side bonus to it is.

Generally speaking, tribal decks are about "creature type matters" cards. Decks, where you get additional benefits for playing a particular creature type, or simply only one creature type. In essence, it's all about synergy and card interactions. One could build a deck for an unsupported creature type (like Mutants), but then you mostly just limit your card choices without reaping any benefit, and you could just as well build a nontribal deck.
Examples:
Most Allies have triggers that trigger of of them or another Ally entering the battlefield, giving each Ally an additional effect just for being an Ally.
Playing Zombies breaks the synergy of Call to the Grave and Noxious Ghoul. The later is also greatly enhanced by playing lots of zombies.
Playing a single creature type against a deck with more diverse creature types breaks the synergy of Harsh Mercy.

Many creature types have "lords", usually creatures that give a bonus to all creatures of a specific type. Like Knight Exemplar, Undead Warchief, Lord of the Unreal, etc.
Some utility cards can give a bonus to a creature of a specific type, like Daru Encampment or Wirewood Lodge.
Some abilities, like Soulshift, work only for a specific creature type (in this case spirits).
Some cards can have an enhanced effect if applied to a specific creature type, like Ghoulcaller's Chant or Silver-Inlaid Dagger.
